What are some weird, bizarre, or unhinged indie games you're surprised to find on Switch? Games that you'd expect to find on Itch.io only. The more experimental the better. This is the kind of stuff I'm looking for.

Magician

9th Dawn III
A surprisingly compelling 2D top-down dungeon crawler / monster tamer.

World of Horror
A great 2-bit callback to pen-and-paper rpgs with Junji Ito-inspired art.

Carrion
A metroidvania that has you being the bad guy. Not many games let you be the antagonist.

Trigger Witch
Zelda but with guns.

Doki Doki Literature Club
There aren't many visual novels that make me this uncomfortable. I had no clue.

Switch Physical Collection - 1,294 games (as of September 28th, 2024)

Oneshot: World Machine Edition is probably the most surreal and emotional game I've ever played (and I've played Majora's Mask). I think that game made me lose my appetite for a week.

Plz play Oneshot (World Machine Edition)

I find weird games on Switch very normal and unsurprising compared to the amount of utter trash — AI-generated hentai puzzle game #47, asset-flip platformer which crashes on level 3 and has no way to progress, AAA Clock Gold ($99 on the eShop), etc.

Then there are the games where it is hard to tell (without playing) whether they are trying to be edgy and experimental or are just trash. Bedrotting is a good example. Description: "In this game, you lie in bed, trying to survive for 20 days. You have to eat, carry about your mental state, and use a bucket as a toilet. You are a young girl who got into a car crash". Ok, could be interesting-- maybe a visual novel or emotional puzzle game. Nice cover art, although the fact that there is an adult toy on the cover of this T for teen game is questionable. Then you look at the screen shots and they look like extremely poorly drawn 1990s 3D horror graphics and you're like 'wtf'.

That said, the weirdest game on Switch I've personally played which wasn't simply bad was probably Everything. That is a surreal game.

Squirrel Stapler is just my type of messed-up dark comedy. Constantly having you say "What the heck?!"
There's also a game called Puss, which is basically scary-maze game mixed with surrealist imagery. (And you play as a cat, hence the name.) I cannot stress enough though, it is filled to the brim with flashing neon colors. Definitely stay away if you're prone to epilepsy.

@Novamii I've played Poi; seems extremely non-weird. But ... what the heck is squirrel stapler? 😆

@FishyS I don't even know where to begin describing it. It's super short, but man is it weird. It's made by the same guy who made Iron Lung, if that gives you any indication of it's contents. Save for a couple gruesome visuals, it's mostly the overall vibe that just feels...wrong. But I mean that in a good way. I'd describe it as more of a dark-comedy than horror. It took me only about an hour to beat, and I got it real cheap. From what I can tell, it was part of a horror-anthology game that was divided into standalone releases (At least on Switch, though my knowledge on the original game is very limited.) It definitely made me feel a certain way after beating it, and I will not forget it anytime soon. That's for sure.

Also yeah, don't know why I added Poi to the list. I guess I was just more thinking of smaller games that went under the radar. Not really weird though, so I'll remove it. Still though, Puss and Squirrel Stapler are more than worthy of being on this thread. XD

@Novamii Interestingly, another squirrel game just came out on the eShop today - Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel. I notice the Switch eshop has a third squirrel game also - The great battle of Shark Monkey Squirrel Dinossaur Bird Bee. (and yes, dinosaur is misspelled in the title)

Well, it's not on the Switch, but the weirdest indie title I can think of is an old WiiWare game called Eduardo the Samurai Toaster. I do wish it were on the Switch though. It's a simple run and gun game where you obviously play as a samurai toaster. It had some pretty nice artwork and music too

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone! I've added several to my wishlist. I've got a couple to recommend too. These aren't super obscure, so you might already know them, and they're not super weird either, but they qualify I think. I actually haven't finished all of these, so I can't 100% vouche for their quality.
