Or if you wanna be THAT guy, Wand of Gamelon 2. Took 'em long enough to make a proper follow-up.

A new 2D Zelda that finally puts the Princess in the spotlight has been a long time coming now, and it seems to be continuing with the great Zelda experiment of breaking tradition and pushing what the series can be.

Discuss.

I’m stoked. I love the LTTP era artstyle (and it’s my favorite 2D era) and the game play looks fun and innovative without demanding too much from the player (so the folks the complained about ultrahand). But also familiar (zelda summoning warriors to fight for her isn’t new). This feels like a direct sequel to LTTP as well or an alternate ending as Link couldn’t get to the Triforce. 9 year old me is freaking tf out right now. Adult me is as well lmao.

So the juvenile me always found it funny when link would throw a rock at enemies (the animation tickles me for some reason) so watching Zelda do it was extra funny for some reason.

Princess Zelda created a bed for making ladders.
Wut?

Couldn’t be an easier day 1 buy for me. The echo mechanic looks neat, though it’s obvious they were inspired by the TOTK mechanics with this one, considering the menus, open ended results etc.

Generally quite happy to see this art style return, as well as another top-down Zelda. It's a really charming style.
As for gameplay? I'll wait and see. No doubt that I'll enjoy it, but how will it rank compared to other entries?

And I'm unsure about the direction we're heading with this and Tears of the Kingdom. When did we suddenly start building planes, mechs, climbing walls with beds? Making towers of water?
There is an aspect of puzzle solving that makes it very "Zelda", but I don't need everything to be a sandbox. Kinda hoped that the top-down games would remain more traditional.

Easily my favourite announcement of the Direct, and my expectations were so stinkin' low given that I wasn't expecting any major new releases from Nintendo this year other than ports/remakes.

I love that they're more or less giving top-down Zelda a sandbox twist similar to what TOTK's Zonai devices did for BOTW's Hyrule.

And the Echo mechanic will almost certainly generate a ton of memes. Bring 'em on.

It's been a long time since a new 2d Zelda so I'm glad they aren't abandoning that style.

@Kimyonaakuma I am on the same train here. I was kind of looking forward to a different experience than Totk in 2D, but i guess this is just the style Nintendo wants to push forward in the Zelda franchise in general.
Still, it is somewhat exciting to see Zelda as the main character at last and i will most certainly buy and try it out in the end

Gosh, I thought for a sec that it was gonna be a remake of A Link to the Past with the Link's Awakening remake art style, judging by the in-game world. But I'm glad it's a new game. It's gonna be interesting to play as Zelda this time... looking forward to playing this one!

I struggle to think how the echoes will remain fun for very long. But then again, I didn't think open-world Zelda would work and BotW definitely proved me wrong. So I'll keep an eye on it at least.

StarryCiel

As someone who liked BotW and was very disappointed about TotK, I'm cautiously optimistic about this one. I miss the classic Zelda formula a lot, but as long as Nintendo keeps experimenting with ideas I'm willing to stick around and see what they come up with. As long as the puzzles are engaging and can't all just be completely bypassed by stacking beds or something, this has the potential to be a fun time.

I just wish the trirod was also used for slashing. If that was your main way of combat, and then creating echoes as a secondary function, I'd be good with that. Not sure how I feel about creating items for combat the entire time honestly.

This year seems to be a big one for Nintendo's Princesses. But I do wonder why they both need a floating companion and so many gimmicks.
Peach has always been a damsel in distress for the most part...but Zelda has done so much!

She's learned magic, archery, swordsmanship - she's even been a pirate!
It's a shame that she's free to save Hyrule (finally), and all she has is a magic stick. A cool stick, but it makes beds...

@Solaine Exactly, it's good to see Zelda as a main character. And we're both probably buying it anyway
I just didn't expect this direction for the series. When they said their aim was to "break the conventions of Zelda" - I thought that was for Breath of the Wild, not the entire franchise going forward.

I'm sooooo excited for this!

I do wish the combat was different but I'm sure it'll still end up being really fun

I just want to know If there will be a full list of themed dungeons and bosses, and items from each. If it has that, I can look past the combat shortcomings.

@StarryCiel If it helps, the trailer already shows you have a time limit on how long anything summoned stays on the field. It's unclear if summoning more items also reduces that further, but when stacking three beds the first one was already blinking to disappear.

@Kimyonaakuma To be fair, Zelda has usually been either a summoner or an archer (other than Tetra of course), and I think summoning had a lot more potential to make playing as Zelda feel like something special. Plus, we don't know if she'll also get other magic as well... It's still very early.

And as for companions, it's not like Link ever... well there was Navi... and Tatl and Midna and Fi and Ciela and Ezlo and King of Red Lions... It's kind of a Zelda staple lol, even if it's not in every game.

That's kind of why I said this game was continuing the Great Zelda experiment, which I feel like they've earned the right to do so. They've made enough Zeldas in a style that it's only natural they'd want try and break away from that.

What themes can we see here? A reversal of gender roles. Let's have a thoughtful discussion. The 'damsel in distress' becomes the heroine to save the usual hero - now crying out at the mercy of Zelda more than ever!

As I said in the other thread before it was locked. I am excited for this but where's my Switch port of Link Between Worlds I still want to finish that game.
