Nintendo has revealed its next generation of hardware – the Nintendo Switch.
It's a device that plugs into a dock unit for play on TV, and can then be removed in a tablet form for play on the go – it features full controller and detachable control elements, depending on player choice.
The first look is below.
Games featured included a new Mario, what seems to be a port of Mario Kart 8, a port or sequel for Splatoon, and what appears to be Skyrim (among others).
Let us know what you think!
More to follow on Nintendo Life.

I still say the real NX is the friendship we made along the way.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmvWPiV37BM
Take my money Nintendo! My body is ready! Lol or at least my thumbs, I've had enough of motion controls...
Let it rain!
Edit: Here's a screengrab I took of the new Pro Controller from the trailer. Looks like a rough prototype and has the traditional d pad. Note the circle around the d pad. Perhaps the finished article will have swappable control sticks like was rumoured.
**cancels pre-order of Wii U Zelda Breath of the Wild**
**waits for Nintendo Switch pre-orders to open**
Skyrim, nba2k???
The Nintendo Dom/Sub
Hey. I think it's sweet but the details are going to matter. Price, performance all of it.
Anyone noticed if there is trigger or buttons on the controller ? I miss thoses good old trigger from the GC era. It was important for games like F-Zero ...
This thing is perfect for pokemon
Imagine if they saved 7th gen pokemon for an NX launch title
Millions of systems would sell
Hopefully we get a better game list soon.
I have mixed feelings.
It looks really good, but will this be the end of dual screen handhelds? That would make me sad.
Definitely picking it up day one regardless.
Nintendo wins
I'm honestly liking the name. Nintendo Switch... Sounds like it could really click with all audiences just like "Wii" without sounding awful. I'm honestly loving this console already!
The best part: The satisfying click you get from the controller.... Goodness gracious
The Mario kart is either heavily updated or a new entry. King Boo is not in 8, and there is 2 item slots!!!
So... the Switch is basically what everyone was expecting it to be. Ok.
Yes! Even if the main concepts had already been leaked, I was still amazed! Console quality games on a handheld! Zelda! Skyrim! Wii U games! It looks so seamless! I want it now, not March!
Looks very cool but still not sure how I feel about it yet tho looked very cheap plasticy at the mo.
amazing
Wow. I new it would be a handheld/ Hybrid. WE have to get use to calling it the NS.
I'm not seeing how it's a "new concept in gaming". Gameplay-wise it changes absolutely nothing. They basically, as expected, fused together their home console and portable console into one console to strengthen their market because they couldn't live as two separate entities any more. It looks great and it's IMO a smart move, but there isn't anything "new" for gaming here.
Portable Skyrim just sounds really, really good. I need this in my life.
I want it now.
it's very important that I have it.
I WILL DELAY MY IMPORTANT MEDICAL HORMONE TREATMENT TO PAY FOR THIS SYSTEM
Splatoon 2!!!!!!!!!!!!
not bad. We hope it will be like ps4 in performance or better.
Wish they stuck to the NX name though. A bit undecided on the hardware itself. It looks decent enough i guess.
This is exactly what I wanted NX...now Switch to be, an upgraded concept of the WiiU to take my game anywhere I want, both with a "normal" controller and not all that gimmicky stuff. Good job Nintendo! Now...let the 3rd party games flow!
(and please give us a new Metroid?)
Looks too complicated for children aimed more for adults also looks expensive.
@ThanosReXXX
@rjejr
@Captain_Gonru
What do you think?
Still think there's a dedicated console coming with this? No amiibo shown! They used your method of attaching controllers @rjejr.
It's basically a Wii U gamepad with a bigger screen. I AM SOLD!!!!!
All right Nintendo. You have my attention. Now its time to release some info about the games, pricing, bundles and whatever other goodies you have in store for us
I can't get that song or that darned clicking outta my head!...goes to GameStop to preorder Nintendo switch
Early feelings: Nintendo knocked the message out of the park. I'm sold on the concept
@aaronsullivan it's clear this isn't a PS4 Pro or Scorpio Killer, what this is is a beefed up Wii U on the GO! and I'm down with that.
The fact that both Skyrim and NBA 2K17 were shown means that Nintendo will the finally get the third part support it's needed for years
They Switched the name, as expected.
Unlikely to be able to afford first day purchase, but eventually. As such, my WiiU Breath of the Wild preorder will remain in place.
Looks promising. I'm looking forward to more specifics.
Well that was neat, I don't think those are ports maybe that's Nintendo's way of saying backwards compatibility with Wii U titles.
Hyped for Breath of the Wild & new 3D Mario. Triple jump is back!!
Well it's what I've wanted since Wii U was announced, so I'm happy. The name doesn't exactly light a fire in my heart, but it's better than "Wii" or "Wii U" so it's not a big deal.
Does it have a Unified account?
Can you voice chat online?
These are big ones.
@Gentlegamer I approve this message
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Damn you beat me to it, good man!
Naysayers BTFO
And that game list... It looks like it's getting a decent amount of third-party support... That definitely looks like an NBA game from the annals of EA!
So, it's the Morphus X300 after all!! Lol! Anyway. Yeah, this definitely appeals to me. And I will preorder it whenever it's available to do so at Gamestop.
Cool concept. Simple and to the point even with a "normal controller"! (Its about time)... Good job Nintendo. Thanks for sharing, Nintendolife. I hope everyone else enjoyed the premier preview.
Bethesda! You cheeky devils! After all that noncommittal talk about the NX, I see Skyrim running on that thing! Make Doom a launch title and I'll buy it day 1.
@Aaron09 probably splatoon port, but i'd expect a splatoon 2 in the near future.
The name is exactly what it needed to be and has multiple great meanings. NS Nintendo Switch. Very nice.
@Gentlegamer haha i had to think of that too
@Simbabbad Are you kidding? I can now play Kart 8 and Skyrim (if It actually runs without crashing) anytime anywhere I want. That alone is a new concept
I guess now the nickname in short will become the NS! Looks interesting but those controllers look a bit small no?? Was also surprised to see a basketball game in there...2K17?? I hope third party support will be real this time!! And virtual console continues forward!!
@Phin68 that's a good thing!
and that name. It rhymes with itch, witch, and .....tch. I love it.
Keep it coming
Yes yes yes yes yes yes!
The splatoon game is definitely a sequel to the first game. Did someone else notice the different stage and the different hairstyles?
Is this the end of the line for Nintendo's handhelds ?
I want it! throws money at screen
I'm ready for the Mario switch bundle
@RoomB31 its not a port ! Its a new game ! New weapons , new hairstyles , new maps , new clothes !!
Beautiful machine of Switch....
Yeah, i like the name.
It sounds Nintendo Switch ON the Game with Revolutionary concept.
But i still curious some things..
Will it have backward compatibility ?
Will Switch Finally Region Free ?
Will it started by at least 500GB ?
Will it have White color bundle ?
Because i love White color for video games...
@Kalmaro Daniel Bryan ? Lol
Every time someone in the video went to the TV, they had to plug in the screen. I'm going to be incredibly disappointed if they have 2 screens but can only use one at a time.
Were all those games WIIU games?
Yay portability!
No sight of Wii or Wii U related accessories. Will it be compatible with them? The hardware barrier is always there...
Stylish presentation. Reminds me of the GameCube commercials, it caters to the crowd who wants Nintendo to be more "cool"...
It looks really sharp! I'm still waiting on more specific specs and details, though.
But still...Skyrim. I've been wanting that on a Nintendo system for ages. 8D
God is real.
I don't care too much about portable gaming, so I'm not that excited. Though I like the name more than most people apparently, Switch has a nice ring to it
@Anti-Matter 3DS support I might see since it uses carts... however the execution could be interesting.
Isn't that a new Mario Kart game? At the least it's somewhat different from MK8...
Looking at the Splatoon characters they used at the end of the video, you can see that they have different hairstyles than from the wii u version
So many questions and I took a sick day. I fell pathetic in a good way.
The only issue I have with that trailer is that the song will never leave my poor head
Other than that... what can we say? Hybrid. Multiplayer. Mario Kart 8 everywhere. Wii games everywhere. New Mario. New Zelda. New--
Sorry, sorry, I had to contain my excitement. It's just that...
Oh my, it happened again, it's just that... wait, is that Skyr--
OKAY FINE, I'LL BUY THIRTY
...
THOUSAND
The "Nintendo Switch" name is catchy, simple, and casual friendly too imo. Very cool!
So, who is "switching" over from PS4/Xbox One to Nintendo Switch? Lol... JIust joking but i had to say it for the laughs.
It shall be mine. OH YES, it shall be mine.
I thought it was great. It IS those very first rumours we heard years ago now. No real gimmicks. Yeah, the at home/on the go could be classed as a gimmick, but I don't think developers will alter/spoil games around that the same way motion and second screen features were forced in and ruined some great games. This will just be regular games that stand on their own quality.
I'm not sure it will really be a huge success though. It's still going to mainly appeal to that core of Nintendo users that buys all their stuff. It's like Wii U with the multi platform games.
Nvidia confirmed:
https://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/2016/10/20/nintendo-switch/
definitely won't be getting this day one. maybe next christmas but I'm not sure my hubby will go for it. It depends on the price but we did just get a PS4 this year and I still have plenty of games to buy for my Wii U and 3DS and PS4.
YEEEEEEHHHHH
Day 1!! I like how they have taken my personal fave feature of the wii u ( off tv play) and amped it up. Looks good but unfortunately, i think its a little yoo close to the wii u to be a commercial hit but i loved what i saw and i cant wait!!
O my hype!!!
@Rob_mc_1 EA is in the top left, ya loon...
@ -DEMISE-
It could've been the Nintendo sWIItch.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE source for the third party pic?
This looks awesome. I'm so ready for March 2017. Looks like I know what I'm spending my income tax return on next year 😁
Will Yokai Watch 2 still come to the UK? Or can I play 3DS on it 2DS style?
I sure want it, and as soon as a new Mario and a new Mario Kart are announced it will be mine. I'll start saving money now.
Anyway, I want to put some criticism in what appears to be no significant graphic upgrade. Not that I personally mind, but it surely will damage its reputation and we won't win any Sony fanboy over. I mean, what Nintendo doesn't need right now is to be the laughingstock for its graphics again. Regardless of how fun are its games, which they are.
I hope that what we just saw is simply Wii U footage in order to show backwards compatibility. New Mario game notwithstanding.
I was apprehensive and now I'm totally excited! This machine looks great, the screen looks very slim, the detachable controllers look handy and the games looks promising.
We saw Nintendo and third party games, with Skyrim, NBA 2k, Splatoon, Zelda, Mario...
As Ice Cube once said, Today was a good day!!!
So...preorders up yet?
Wow...just wow
https://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/2016/10/20/nintendo-switch/
POWERED BY NVIDIA TEGRA
So, pretty much exactly like the rumours, which I'm happy about. But, I'm still not sure why having to plug/hide the main gamepad screen part away in the console dock when at home and playing on the TV is a good design choice; it totally eliminates any chance of using the thing like a regular Wii U or 3DS from what I can see, and that would have been a huge selling point for me.
Also, can we even use a stylus with this device and on that screen, because that was also another true strength of the Wii U with games like Super Mario Maker and Art Academy: Atelier for me personally.
The Switch seems like a pretty cool idea but I hope we're not just giving up lots of stuff to get some variety in how and where we play; I kind of believe we could have easily gotten both and that the system would have been even better for it.
I'll need to see more of the hardware/tech and learn more about the games and experiences coming to the system before I finally decide how I really feel about it. . . .
And cue Sony and Microsoft scrambling to copy the Switch concept.
Day 1.
They're calling it the "Joy-Con". Really?
Welp it is exactly what I was hoping it would be, and now I can officially say I am on board as long as the system has a good launch line-up. I wonder if that is the original version of Skyrim or the remastered one because if it is the latter then the Nintendo Switch has some power behind it. Show me the price and it's other capabilities and I think they have day one purchaser on their hands. Hopefully the system is easy enough to plug in to the point that I can bring it to a friend's house so they can give it a try because that would help improve word of mouth substantially.
I'm more interested in presence of competitive nintendo titles
@Wexter
Yes...! 3DS backward.
But i will blewn away if Switch can read all region of 3DS cartridges. I wanna play some imported 3DS games from Japan or Europe.
@Xaessya I think we have a winner here!
Missed opportunity: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Switch_(song)
But seriously. I'm sold. I just need to know about multiplayer. Will I need two of these beasts for local multiplayer? How does that work with the docking station? Is Nintendo finally abandoning local multiplayer? I saw people using more than one at a time in the trailer, I just want to know the logistics.
Funny thing I told my wife and she says "No your NOT getting one!" Then I showed her the video, she promptly says "YOUR NOT GETTING TWO!" I've never felt so victorious.
@sp_initiate-001 Sony have been kind of doing this for years with PS4 remote play.
@Megapokepaul that doesn't mean its not a port,
a port can have all of those things, the original kept getting new things. Hey look, I'd love it to be a sequel, but right now that's unclear.
Woop Woop, air horn Elder Scrolls on a Nintendo console? Truly a step forward for Nintendo, instant preorder no questions asked after the first, I got a ps4 for multiple reasons, but I'm getting Skyrim for switch:D, let's not forget Splatoon 2:hair edition
Looks nice for sure.
All the people on here who doubted Eurogamer and doubted Emily Rodgers.
Sorry guys, you were so wrong! Time to eat humble pie
Exactly what I wanted!!!!
@Simbabbad I suppose if you can truly play the same games on the go as you can at home as opposed to scaled-down ports on handheld , then that is a new concept. Hard to know without the details on performance. And is it a whole package or can you just buy the portable element?
RIP 3DS
RIP Streetpass
RIP Handheld Console
I hope they carry on with classic handhelds as they were always the most affordable gaming systems.
@Peach64 The lack of multiplatform games is what made the WiiU fail so badly, and the useless gimmick of the huge controller, and the fact that Nintendo could never make "casual" people understand that the WiiU was a different console and not a Wii extension; those things are removed with Switch (showing Skyrim and NBA 2k17 is maybe a glimpse of 3rd party support finally coming).
I love the look and the concept. This is going to be huge. I bet they release a console Zelda bundle with all of the new amiibo. That would be the package I'd choose.
@Moon I saw that on Nintendo Wire myself... :3
I'm impressed! I was going to be a day one buyer no matter what, but I'm extremely excited now! If this machine is backwards compatible, even with just download titles from WiiU and/or 3DS, I think my head would explode!
@chansey
I have exactly the opposite opinion. It looks perfect for children. They do not care as much about high end performance and the ability to take it to a friend's house and play will be very cool for kids. They will do that far more often than adults will!
@Anti-Matter other than the fact that it has a cartridge slot, how is this 3DS backwards compatible? no dual screens so I doubt backwards compatibility, and if it does its gonna be weird like wii U does DS.
Now we wait for preorders, and more information!
@aaronsullivan You remember that controller attachment discussion? Good memory.
Do you also remember my really 1 and only big gripe about this potential system? As a home gamer, why am I paying $50 or $60 for a a screen THEY HID BEHIND A FREAKIN WALL!! Why not save me $60 and make a home version w/o the screen? Or better yet, turn it into a Sony Dash? Or at least a digital clock or photo frame. Why cover it up, that makes no sense.
Also, smaller problem 2, what if 1 of my kids takes my home console someplace? Now each of us has to have one. Which would be fine under $200, but a system, dock, detachable controllers and Pro style controller. that won't be cheap.
So I think it's great, Nintendo should have gotten out of the home console business, and they did, this is a handheld w/ TV out, but I'm not a handheld gamer. My kid swill each get 1, I'm done. I am smart enough to know I'm an old man and not the target audience, videogames are a young man's (and woman's) game, so I think they did everything right, it just isn't for me personally. Their stock should go up. Way up. I'm excited to tell my kids. And to get my PS4.
@Grawlog
That was big. They need the sports games (I know people hate them but they are important) so seeing NBA 2K was Important. But to also have Bethesda on board is a very big deal. Add Rockstar and get all this on the market at a reasonable price and this is a definite purchase. Not time for MS to start panicking yet because Scorpio hasn't and won't be given a full reveal for a while, but Sony should be getting nervous.
@AlexSora89 White Denim song in the trailer is a WIN. Fantastic band.
@sp_initiate-001 Microsoft and Sony are probably laughing. This is a gimmick that removes and reduces functionality from the Wii U.
RIP Wiiu
@Moon There's also this list on Nintendo's official site
https://www.nintendo.co.uk/News/2016/October/Nintendo-Switch-world-premiere-demonstrates-new-entertainment-experiences-from-a-home-gaming-system-1148687.html
So is it cartridge based or is it all digital?
As expected a certain people are AWOL following the positive reception of this system. Great to see lots of people are happy and the doomongers are not ruining it.
Also a shoutout to all those extras who kept their mouths shut since this was filmed as well as the leakers who were spot on despite the inane amounts of hateful comments they were receiving.
Today was good day.
@Krshna28 Nah 3DS should still be held on to, this doesn't look very pocket friendly.
It looks great! I'm actually super excited about this!
@IceClimbers Woah. So this thing was 100% leaked. lol
First impression, I'm not wild about this at all. Not the great innovative idea you built it up to be, Nintendo.
Plus, anyone else finding it funny that the 2DS was a cheese wedge and this thing is like a toaster that you grab and take the toast from to play on? Their R&D people must be breakfast lovers.
@TwilightOniAngel that happened months ago.
I think most people already switched from Nintendo...
@xj220_afiles There are trigger buttons, if you see some specific images from the trailer, they're there on each side.
@Tasuki they showed cartridges going in the top a couple of times. Though that was leaked ages ago.
The small detachable controllers appear to have buttons in the inside. You can see one guy press them to slide in Mario Kart.
Probably the tegra X2 with a Pascal GPU
Glad I checked this out this morning! Can't wait, was going buy remastered skyrim , but I'll wait for more details. I'll probably buy it regardless cause portable,sky is amazing, but sheesh! If it supports mods like x1, that would be great!
So it's basically "Wii U 2: What The Wii U Should Have Been In The First Place".
And it looks like the last of the Wii U's exclusives will be getting ported over. Yet another middle finger to Wii U owners, in the long line of middle fingers to Wii U owners.
@Tasuki There are cartridges. You can see in the trailer somebody puts one in.
I wonder how big the hard drive will be and work since it is a home console / handheld? Will we be using SD cards to expand it or does it have built in? Also I wonder about the battery life?
I watched the trailer so many times that the only thing I can think of is "Ha Haa, Ha Haa, Yeeah!".
@RatKing64 I agree. This is perfect for children who are more likely to be growing up with tablets already. With Nintendo's typical approach to parental controls, I think parents will also be happy.
How can i play splatoon without 2 screen?
https://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/2016/10/20/nintendo-switch/
Nvidia behind the inards of the device
@Artemis zing! Gonna be seeing that a lot I bet, good that it's out of the way early!
High-five
IT WAS ALL TRUE
HOLY CRAP
@Tasuki
The video shows cartridges. Small looking ones.

It's amazing how Nintendo couldnt' show us this earlier b/c they didn't want Sony or MS to steal their idea.
Nintendo switch uses a custom Nvidia Tegra:
https://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/2016/10/20/nintendo-switch/
@rjejr I highly doubt all those controllers will be bundled together. Hell I'm skeptical about the pro controller-ish dock, for the two side controllers, is even included.
I really hope this is the new handheld/console- accessiblity to ALL the games out there and I wont have to pack up two consoles anymore when on vacation/trip. It's just what I need
throws wallet at Nintendo just take it,come march it'll all be yours anyways! lol
Lots of great stuff, not exactly fond of the name yet, but everything else was so great that I could careless about the name lol
Showed off Skyrim, Mario Kart 8, Splatoon, new 3D Mario game, Breath of the Wild...just awesome!
And I love the controls for this! One pro style controller that takes the controls off and slides into the portable, and another pro controller that is just your basic controller! Also you can use the controllers you slide out in some games and use those seperately like NES style controllers!
I hate to say it, but I want more info on the games now...I NEED MORE! This is a day one for me already!
MK8 is an easy port since the gamepad did essentially nothing. Splatoon they would need to re-work the map/super jump controls
Wish there was more on the games. To me that and previous eshop content coming forward are the important items. That and price. I'm just meh on a hybrid. I don't see this ever leaving the doc for me.
Seems to be the new Mario Kart, or at least dlc. King Boo was playable!
Splatoon is trending worldwide TWICE
This was exactly what I wanted. All the rumours and I was like, don't get hyped it's too good to be true.
It's true. All of it.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Dark Souls incoming?!!!
It's definitely what most rumors say, and I like it...well, kind of.
I personally wanted the Switch's GamePad to act similarly to the Wii U GamePad, where the player had a touch screen for use during gameplay. Sure, the DS and 3DS exist, but I want to have both a touch screen and the TV, and that's where the Wii U came in for me. I want more input options when I play games on my TV and once again, the Wii U was there for me. But...if the Switch has more than enough innovative features to separate itself from the Wii U, then...I'll be over it.
I'm still getting the system, though
FROM SOFTWARE!!!!!!!!!
@SLIGEACH_EIRE HAHAHAH NO SUPPORT FROM !!! EA GAMES!!
@Megapokepaul Or, it could be new stuff they have been working on, as new Add-On content for Splatoon.
Am I the only one not sold to this Nintendo thing ?
D A Y 1 !
@RoomB31
Switch screen looks pretty big I bet both DS screens could easily fit on it.
Glad I'm not the only one that noticed the King! Very interested, and really hope it can play 3DS games too!
Part of me hopes that there's a second graphics chip in the docking station so that when you're playing at home, the graphics get upgraded...
@rjejr
I wouldn't write it off for yourself yet. Let's see how it's packaged, priced, and sold. It's interesting that there is a controller and there is a dock... could there be a dedicated compatible system that just sits there and never lifts off for a cheaper price? This could be just the start.
Unduly excited for Spla2oon's customisable hair options. As for the console, they seem to more or less have nailed it. Fundamentally what we were expecting, but seemingly very well executed and backed up with... games!
@River3636 HAHA the NS. They barely changed the name!
I hope it comes with another controller.
@Cesco Nope. From what I've seen so far the Wii U is superior in design.
@River3636: YES!! "NS" works so much better than "Switch". Counting the days until MarioKartNS!!!
So dual screen gaming has run its course?
What a nice coincidence for me. I wasn't aware of the announcement for the trailer until just a few minutes before it was released. Initial impression of it is good. The hardware looks well thought out. The sliding mechanism appears good. I'm surprised Nintendo's traditional branding/logo appears absent, even from the dock. I look forward to hearing what the CPU/SoC ended up being. Probably has some impressive passive cooling for something doing games of that level. Also surprisef by the name. I thought they were just going to stay with NX like with DS. Good luck, Nintendo.
@Lalivero HAHAHAH NO SUPPORT FROM !!! EA GAMES!!
@Cesco
Yes, You are
Will this replace both WiiU and 3DS?
Geesh nintendo, show us something we didn't already know. It's like a fully realized wiiu - I'll play it like the wiiu probably 90% of the time. It'll be annoying having to pull up another screen to drop ink strikes and super jumps. Not a lot of details, just a bunch of young attractive people. Maybe they were the sources of these rumors - there were quite a few of them, plus all those people on the airplane. Looks like we're getting a sequel to Mario 64. I must admit 3D world has really grown on me. I kind of enjoy it more.
@plug313 I guess that all depends on your perspective. We waited over a year for the reveal of a system we've seen thousands of rumors confirm that it's a hybrid console well beforehand. Looks like a fine system, but's it's nothing new.
I think it may be a day one buy after all.
Nintendo Duo, is that you??
Well I'm glad it's not called the NX, Switch is much more catchy and to the point of what this console is all about.
I found interesting the basketball scene when the two screens were placed back to back this made me wonder if the player is given there own perspectives when the screens are linked like this. Would be great for sport games FIFA, Tennis etc.
So much to look forward to in the coming months as more detail is released.
Would like to know the price.
Also how did they get all those people in that stadium to keep this a secret!
@aaronsullivan Honestly, no idea. Did not expect the crappy tablet thing to be true. I thought Nintendo was smarter than that. Just now, I was sharing a virtual cup of poison with @rjejr in another article. I have to let this settle and I will get back to you when the smoke in my mind has cleared...
I do think we'll still see a family of devices, though. But then again: I could be wrong about that one also...
Which... makes Nintendo bloody liars, by the way:
How the HELL does that match up with "Nintendo Switch"?
@aaronsullivan #31
There were some Super Mario amiibo in the trailer at around 2:24 (just standing there next to the console and a TV) perhaps Switch will use that Bluetooth NFC reader that Nintendo Life reported yesterday?
Nintendo appeals to fans of Nintendo, i guess. people seem excited here, pretty skeptical over at kotaku. as a newcomer to Nintendo, gotta admit this isn't doing much for me. i'm here for the portability of the 3ds, and i would still rather see a vita-powered (or better) iteration on that than what is likely still an underpowered console. if i'm going to make a major investment, i think i would rather get the ps vr setup.
but i suspect i'm in the minority here.
@Sakura Thank you
@Lalivero Thank you, too
It will be hard to stop calling it the NX...
Interesting...
This. Is. Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes!! God above yes!!!!!!! I haven't been this hyped for any game console since the 3DS was announced in 2010! Nintendo, take my money...you won...(again!)
"The Nintendo Switch will be a hybrid gaming system. It will connect to a television when resting in the Nintendo Switch Dock, and when lifted out of the dock, will "instantly transition to portable mode," according to Nintendo. The unit offers a "high-definition display," and features two detachable Joy-Con controllers, one on either side.
Each Joy-Con controller can be slotted into an accessory called the Joy-Con Grip to "[mirror] a more traditional controller." The console will also support a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller to be used instead of the detachable Joy-Con units." - Polygon
"Nintendo Switch is powered by the performance of the custom Tegra processor. The high-efficiency scalable processor includes an NVIDIA GPU based on the same architecture as the world’s top-performing GeForce gaming graphics cards." From NVIDIA ENJOY GUYS!
One thing
the marketing team at Nintendo NAILED IT THIS TIME, its so like the Anti-WiiU
Wow! Pretty much exactly what I was hoping for. And Skyrim too. Nice work Nintendo.
Give me Persona 5 on this and I buy it day 1. I'm impressed.
Nintendo exec: "Think our fans have bought enough of our random controllers yet?"
Miyamoto: "No! Take our pro controller, chop it into two...it's genius I tell you, bwhahahah hahah hahaa..." cough
Miyamoto goes back to gardening
@jwfurness
Gotta check out the YT video for the song then.
"Colbert Bumps" (which is Tv Tropes lingo for something getting a "bump" from another source causing a resurgence in the former's popularity) are always fun, it's the phenomenon caused by "I knew this song before X". And the comment section for the song's YT video is gonna be fun. Time to grab the popcorn!
@Cesco "Am I the only one not sold to this Nintendo thing?"
This whole "Nintendo" thing is about 127 years old. It's had some ups and downs, but if you're not sold on it by now, I don't think you ever will be.
I just hope the portable has a decent battery life.
@Grawlog That controller does look good indeed.
Nvidia Custom Tegra chip with GeForce architecture! 😩
@Grawlog
It'll likely be worth it for Nintnedo games alone but yeah, if I can get that and all (or at least most) of my favorite third party franchises to play at home or on the go at $400 or $500? I'm down for sure. Agree about the controller.
I actually like this concept way more now that it has been shown off. The fact that it has many companies that have never worked on a nintendo console before is a huge surprise.
@ThanosReXXX
I feel you pain. Is the tablet even touch screen? I only see them using the detachable controllers? Playing Mario Kart with basically sideways nes controllers is fun?
@RainbowGazelle
To NOT leverage the Wii U lineup would be a middle finger to their investors.
I'm getting this immediately, I'm sold
@dronesplitter Yeah, I did also think that, but there's a Nintendo Switch Pro controller too
https://www.nintendo.co.uk/News/2016/October/Nintendo-Switch-world-premiere-demonstrates-new-entertainment-experiences-from-a-home-gaming-system-1148687.html
@Faruko yeah, i do really like the design and symbol on it. it looks nice.
eta - tho the naming is a little weird. not only does nx sound cooler to me than switch, but joy-con just makes me think of Chinese made joye tech vaping devices.
Guys, is it just me, or Skyrim looks a lot better after the guys docks the tablet?
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Congrats for getting those picks up there in the 3rd post.
I still can't believe what I'm seeing. If I'm paying for a very nice touchscreen why am I hiding it behind a wall? Why can't it sit on the base like the Gamepad charger so I can use it as a digital clock or 2nd screen? That's the worse looking idea I've ever seen, 1" stands out of the top, it's not even flush? Why?
Sorry to drag you into that, but the pic was clearer than the vid.
I feel like the 3ds will still stick around for a good while and the Switch won't replace a solely portable gaming system for Nintendo.
What happened to Nintendo website?
@FACEOFBEAR - I know. Did you see that controller? I'm happy with it being a handheld with a dock because I have been trending to more handheld in the last 3 years. I always had them.
@bluedogrulez - I said that immediately. NS... Skyrims NS sounds really good.
I'M AT MY JOB, BUT I SWITCHED TO THIS!!!!!!!!
HAHAHAH NO SUPPORT FROM !!! EA GAMES!!
Lots of valid questions remain, such as cost, detailed specs, etc... but man, this is a very promising start!
@Sakura Yes, thanks. That shows it's even more random, actually. There's no way I can enjoy VC games without a proper d-pad.
@ReifuTD but ugly.
@kugtryne Their logo is on their partners info sheet...sooo...
I'm definitely on board with this. I am very curious about the dock though. Is it just a dock, or does it improve power while playing on TV as well? Also we got a small snippet of a cartridge I'd like to see official photos of those too.
@cleveland124 Pain is a big word, it's like I always said: it's only a hobby. But there is disappointment, because I want them to succeed and to be taken seriously. And I want my triple A grade console games on my big HD TV. Seems to be okay in that department, but is it enough? Only time will tell.
I hope they will market the hell out of this contraption, because it's going to take a whole lot of it before people like me will buy one.
Nintendo.com can't handled the traffic, haven't they learnt from Pokemon Go's mistakes?
I love the concept !! I need to know the price and spec !! Anyway day 1 purchase for me ... but what about all those Wii U games ? Ofc Nintendo will make you pay for the game again full retail price even if you own them on wiiU
@3MonthBeef
No they didn't. The 4 buttons on the left controller are the dpad.
@Phin68 it is new! it's the first hybrid major console. it's going to unify Nintendo's handheld and home console game libraries for the next generation! just because we heard about it before doesn't make it less exciting, they couldn't scrap all their original plans just because information leaked.
marketing came back from vacation! Now here's hoping they don't let up...
@Xaessya Still love you
@kugtryne
Uh, no, this site itself lists EA as a supporter https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2016/10/nintendo_confirms_list_of_third_party_supporters_for_nintendo_switch
And their logo is in the image posted by @SLIGEACH_EIRE above.
@Krshna28
I believe the Nintendo Classic Series will fill that void of affordability. It would make sense.
HERE LIES: NINTENDO 3DS/WII U
R.I.P. IN PEACE
Not entirely sure this is a ground breaking concept. It's a wii u with the features it should have had originally. Specs and price are really going to matter here.
Ps. Another daft name in my opinion
Thank god they didn't call it Wii something or other.
My first console was the NES, and I cannot remember being this ecstatic about a launch trailer. Nintendo might just have unveiled another revolution in gaming.
It looks quite nice design wise, for once, but I hate the DPad. Also, this isn't exactly a new concept, but a mixmashing of various existing concepts into one almost-coherent package.
Which I honestly prefer over Nintendo flailing about with some over-the-top gimmick that either entertains people for two seconds or confuses them about why it even exists.
For once Nintendo is copying everyone else, especially those devices in the Android space, and they're doing a good of it since they're putting their own DNA in it.
Besides, the name Switch is good. It makes sense and isn't lame like every name from the previous generation. It's like Nintendo drove their old naming team to the forest and then brought in new people who had an actual naming sense.
That said, I'm not getting this at launch. I might not even get it for 3 or 4 years. I've been burned far too many times in the previous generation by Nintendo so I'll be taking a break from buying new stuff. If I wanted Nintendo console games, I already have a Wii U with a bunch of games (that I admittedly can barely muster the strength to play, i.e. it's in another room). Most of Nintendo's home console games aren't something I want to play on the go at the moment. I also already own a couple New 3DS (JP and NA) for Ninty's portable efforts and for the few home console ports like Hyrule Warriors and console-style games like MH that pop up on it.
In 4 years time, the hype and dust will have settled and I'll get a good look at the situation. By then there should be a price drop or two and a new model or two. Games library will be bigger as well, even if Switch flops like Wii U the library will still be better at that time than at launch. All kinks in design should be worked out as well from the revisions, just like how the standard New 3DS fixed most of the 3DS's family HORRID design flaws. The youngest child carries the hope of the entire family this time, it seems.
Until then, my Vita and GPD Win will be more than enough to satisfy my cravings of console gaming on the go (and in bed before sleeping). Of course they won't get (Vita), or at least struggle to play (Win) the latest games that the NX SHOULD have little trouble getting and running (assuming Nintendo doesn't flarb up 3rd party relations YET AGAIN), but eh, those can wait. Hmmm, hmmm, by 2021 there may be the chance that another company other than GPD might make a decently powerful gaming UMPC that can run those 3rd party games at least as well as the Switch....guess it'll depend on price.
Looks incredible. Can't wait!
Just noticed it doesn't have a traditional shaped d-pad. Awkward (for platforming and fighting games) or beneficial? Guess we'll see...
BUT I just noticed the separate game pad does. COOL!
Yeah I will be getting this.
Hey people! It might sound like a dumb idea... But for people who have extra finances to spare for two consoles, you should buy a new Wii U/3DS and immediately put it in for indefinite storage in your closet or attic. Again, HARDWARE PRESERVATION!!!
Remember, these last months will be the last gasp of air for the 3DS/Wii U. After they're gone, they're never coming back. Ever.
Remember that.
Please.
What's with the extra long connectors on the game cartidges? Looks odd.
@rjejr I really quite like the concept, but now that you mention it hiding the portable screen within the dock is a bit weird. I'm needing specs, price and game list too. Also, battery life, integration of MyNintendo details, ...
I’m genuinely curious to know if you can still use a stylus on this thing; I really hope so because that was one of the great strengths of the Wii U for me personally, especially when utilised expertly with games like Super Mario Maker and Art Academy: Atelier (as a couple of examples). In fact, is that even a touch screen at all, or is it just a regular display?
@audiobrainiac
Good sight. The Pro controller has a conventional D-pad though.
@sp_initiate-001
LOL, yeah, right.
It's just the Wii U done right... sort of.
I really, really like the whole concept but what worries me is that the promo was portable heavy.
It seems to be pitched as a portable first and foremost and by the way it can connect to the TV.
The Nintendo mob will lap it up as they do anything Nintendo but let's see how the internet reacts to it over time.
They killed the WiiU, let's see if they kill or love Switch.
A passively cooled device means there are serious power cutbacks, regardless of the technology in the GPU.
I quite like the concept, but I'd like to know exactly how it works. Personally, I just want a handheld. As long as it works without needing to be tethered to something, I'll be happy, but I don't want it to need Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
Of lesser importance, I also wonder how powerful it is compared to Wii U. I can't imagine the handheld alone being more powerful (which is understandable), but if the dock just enhances each game in ways like resolution and framerate, it could be that the console overall is not a step up from Wii U (or even weaker), which would have implications for Zelda.
Even so, very interesting, and I'm cautiously optimistic.
I'm not liking the controllers, look so tiny like they were aimed to children. The concept is good but that's what I proposed a long time ago Nintendo should had done with the WiiU.
I wasn't convinced in the hybrid idea, but this trailer sold me on it!.
Did anyone notice that when in the dock the games had better graphics? Maybe that means the dock has a second graphics chip to add power up to PS4 or X1 levels.
Who knows, I'm still getting it.
i see a new mario wild west game ! ! this looks pretty nice, kind of what we expected with all the rumors.
i'm hoping that we see some different color options for the systems at launch, a red switch would be cool to me
Well, I want to like this, but as far as I can tell, this is a Nintendo branded and supported Shield device. I already own a Shield device and while I like the idea in theory, they also have too much issues right now (heat development, battery runtime and most of all software support - basically all you get is really old games, or glorified "mobile games").
It doesn't help that Nintendo showed ports of old games like Splatoon and Mario Kart, and a port of a really old game like Skyrim. I don't know how they how they could get most devs to bother to port current PS4/PS4P/X1/Scorpio games to this ARM/Tegra (?) platform ...
@audiobrainiac Those four directional buttons laid out in a typical d-pad formation should be perfectly good for any games that traditionally use a d-pad (both old and new); it's very much like the split d-pad on PlayStation actually. I don't foresee any issues in this regard.
@iGen Pfft there are still plenty of games that will be released on the 3DS, and I'll be buying while I wait for the NX library to grow.
I wonder how much it is going to cost? I think $250 - $300. $50-$60 for an extra controller because that one does not look comfortable. $50 for memory. $150 - $180 dollars for 3 games at launch. So $500 ++++.
Just got in to see this. Firstly, the concept is brilliant. The name is also brilliant. This looks like you can play home console games on the go without any loss of quality of functionality. And it's interesting to see they're targeting people on the move, everyday gamers and the e-sports scene. All good moves.
They've nailed this first step. But we need more details. We need to know the specs, how the hardware actually works, battery life on portable aspects, online capabilities, and most importantly what games are coming to the system. This is an intriguing and potentially incredible system, but there's still more we need to know.
@iGen didn't Nintendo say they were continuing to support 3ds for awhile? if this thing uses the same cartridges as 3ds, that could be a smart move, might actually convince me to get one.
https://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/2016/10/20/nintendo-switch/ nvidia already has posted that they made the chipsets for it
@audiobrainiac Nintendo tries way too hard to alter basic things we all want them to leave alone, while it's all wrapped up in, overall, a rather dull concept. But yeah, this is making me all the more happy not to buy this thing the first year and just get Zelda on Wii U.
Skyrim. It's all happening. There'll be an Elder Scrolls game I can play on the go, read: more often than a couple times a month. So it's already two confirmed open world games to explore at the pace I choose.
So far this all looks... like what I wanted. Like what I've wanted for a long time indeed. Like what Sony has already tried with Vita but without needing to keep the home station running and online (and to have a quality wi-fi connection where you are, too). So far it looks... awesome.
Again guys, i really don't think this is ending the 3ds... i don't see Nintendo doing away with a full portable system.
What's the difference with the wii U? That you can go outside with the pad? wow...
@ThanosReXXX If specs for AAA games are there, would you consider it? I love the look of the concept as I've always loved the handhelds, but I think you might be right in that it might not attract AAA gamers, unless the price is excellent. I have a feeling it will be more on the expensive side, but could this be done at an advantageous pricepoint?
This is what the Wii and Wii U have been building for! It looks amazing!
@Nin10doh - I will be saving every red cent so I can get the most out of this wonderful looking console.
@xj220_afiles there's something on the controllers that may be a pair of triggers, yes.
@Artemis that and you can play dual screen on the Wii U, this doesn't appear to have that.
Looks like a switch back to single-screen gaming, and touch function seems absent. Feels like a downgrade, to be honest. Now there's possibly no reason to think twice about just getting the PC version of some third-party game. And on that, the third-party support shown is unimpressive to me, but I've never cared for Skyrim or sports. I'll wait and see how stuff like Monster Hunter and Etrian Odyssey fare...
I like it a lot and will buy it day 1.
But that response was to be expected from a nintendo fan lol.
@kugtryne It does have support from EA, it's called Electronic Arts.
I will definitely be buying this! Love the concept.
Tons of friends, who skip Nintendo since GC, are saying "I want this thing NOW"
@Aurumonado
That's exactly why I'm not getting Sun/Moon for 3DS. I'm going to hold out for a year to wait for a potential NX version.
The Switch will be absolutely HUGE in Japan where handhelds rule. Expect Monster Hunter and Pokémon on Switch to be massive.
Elsewhere it will take some time to ramp up. The high-end PS4/Xbox One crowd are not going to get super excited about this unless they buy it as their "other" system for games on the go and the odd big excluiev. However, it will appeal to families (the 3DS crowd) and fans of Nintendo games.
It looks eerily similar to this:
http://regmedia.co.uk/2004/05/12/nintendo_ds_1.jpg
@WillTheLion If it's anything like Twilight Princess on the GameCube, the Wii U version will be worth a lot more down the line. After spending £55 on my second hand GC Twilight Princess I ain't making the same mistake again.
Getting both!
@Simbabbad Really? Where are those Sony or Microsoft Console that can transform to a portable system? Oh yeah, because they haven't been made yet. The concept from rumors has been swirling for years, but the actual execution nobody has done.
@Nin10doh
I'm talking about the systems brand new in their boxes.
I'm serious, anybody at all who has the extra funds and remotely likes Nintendo SHOULD buy one of the systems up for sale now. More people need to think about the future. Once again, hardware preservation!
Not the games, but games could work too. Could be sold for high prices on eBay later on, after all.
This thing looks cool!!!!!!! The system seems to still have a March 2017 release date. Does anyone still believe it'll launch in only 5 months?
As a 45 year old gamer, that owns every single Nintendo gaming device. All I can say right now is NOPE!
I will not be buying day one. Maybe two or three years done the road I will pick one up for my collection.
Like others have said, this is essentially what the Wii U should've been. That said, I'm pretty much on board everything this system has to offer.
It makes me sad that this might be the thing to kill off dual screen functionality, BUT I can also see a dedicated portable version of the Switch hitting shelves a bit later in its life. The Nintendo Switch DS, if you will~
@FX102A
THANK YOU!
People like you are godsends.
Im very happy. I have a lot of questions yet but i know it wll be solved in this months. Nintendo is again in the top.
@AlexSora89 For sure. White Denim is so talented. If you have time, check out their live performance on Austin City Limits.
@Peach64 "It's like Wii U with the multi platform games."
Yeah, I could see why you would think that wouldn't sell, b/c, well, it wouldn't. But try this on for size - "it's like 3DS w/ TV out." 3DS sold 60 million, more people would have bought 1 to play some of those games on their TV - Kid Icarus, the JRPG selection, Monster Hunter, Pokemon.
I don't like it personally, I'm not a handheld gamer, I'd prefer Nintnedo save me $60 and take out the screen and portability, not make me pay even more for a wall to hide the screen behind to get TV out, but there are more of them than me, so it will sell better than Wii U and 3DS combined.
I'm happy. Far exceeded my expectations.
Not sold until I hear about the horsepower comapred to PS4Pro/Scorpio, the battery life when portable, and of course the price, but.....
Nintendo looks like they finally got the train back on the rails.
I wonder how big the hard drive will be? 32G was just nothing for Wii U even though unlike PS4 you can plug in an external drive. I'll take 500G for starters!
@iGen
Already got it covered
Will be a sad day when it comes to an end, but I'm sure many will brave through it
Holy sh*t...
Skyrim on a Nintendo platform...on the go...
I expected absolutely nothing from western 3rd parties...especially Bethesda.
Holy sh*t...What a day to be alive!
@Stubborn_Monkey Cool thanks.
@ThanosReXXX
Well, that's a bummer.
The context of that statement was what the project was started for. I recall that people assumed that it was already decided to be a hybrid and that statement is about how that wasn't the original plan and they hadn't decided how to take advantage of that plan yet. It could be combined or separate. Anyway, that's how I read it back when these statements occurred.
As far as lying goes, it would be interesting to examine quite a few of those sources out there.
I was really hoping it was a hybrid. So ima say this real quick.
To those who tried to debunk the rumors: SUCK IT, M8S!!!!!!!
What intrigues me is that when the Wii U released, a lot of people slammed the dual screen set up. Now the dual screens are gone and people are slamming Nintendo for not having them!
What is going on?
I'm going to wait for the Nintendo Switch XL. LOL. Or maybe the Nintendo "New" Switch XL lol.
@Ralek85 If you look at the shot when he's putting the headphones in it looks like a fan exhaust which probably addresses your heat issue.
So - when the console is docked, does it have improved graphics? The frame rate of some of those games didn't look excellent... (to me at least)
I can see 4 shoulder buttons (thank goodness) but are the L1/R1 buttons those long rumoured sliders?
@dronesplitter I hear you. If they hadn't dropped the ball for me with Wii U I'd be inclined to agree, but i'll probably be getting the Switch at launch. I DID notice the other game pad in the video had a more traditional layout. For me, this is potentially the console I've been waiting on from Nintendo. Hopefully it will be a success.
@Luna_110 What is going on is it's two different groups of people. Those that slammed the dual screen setup are not those who want them to keep it.
Looks interesting. And that definitely isn't Mario Kart 8 in the footage; the players have two items and in MK8 you can only carry one at a time.
Not sold on it yet, Nintendo will need to show off more new games (only 1 in that trailer though Splatoon could be a sequel too early to tell), a price and what happens with Wii U for the next 5 months for me to make a decision.
@Ecto-1 Expanded MK8 port most likely, remember the MK8 DLC tease pre-E3?
I wonder if the console HAS to be docked to use it on the TV? Does the 'dock' have its own chipset to improve the graphical output?
If it does, couldn't we use the tablet as a screen, while also using the 'dock' part connecting to the TV? So we could have two screens? (Wii U VC)
Am I the only person getting Dreamcast vibes from that swappable controller?
@Sakura You lost me at "MyNintendo integration". That was nowhere near entering my mind w/ all that other stuff you mentioned to consider.
Price is big for me. I have 2 sons. A long time ago I bought a PSP. I brought it back the next day b/c it would only allow 1 account at a time, not many like we had on our PS3. Since this is a handheld first, tv out 2nd, will it allow more than 1 account, or will we need to buy 3 of them like PSP? OK, I guess you're right, maybe that is MyNintnedo related, but I was thinking of NNID, not the rewards program.
@Sakura Yeah, I guess the concept needs to settle a bit, after the first bout of disappointment has passed. The controller looks great (the real controller, not the detachable ones) and the third party list is VERY impressive, so give this old dog some time and he might just grow to like it...
@Luna_110 different people?
@SanderEvers True. It just didn't look as smooth as I expected
I like how they are calling it a "home gaming system" when it's purely not.
I wonder what it feels like to be a Nintendo employee in a day like today. So much hype!
Nice, I like what I see here.
They did a better job marketing/explaining this to casual fans in 3 mins then they did the whole Wii U cycle.
@Ecto-1 The style is the exact same as Mario Kart 8, and has Yoshi Circuit as a course which was in MK8. It's a port with new features.
Onboard
@doll Each to their own. While I have been a long term fan of Nintendo, I can agree they've made some muck-ups over the years I've been buying their products.
So, are those detachable controllers capable of even basic motion controls? If not that's Wii compatibility gone out-the-box.
Is that a touch screen and can you use it as a second screen when playing at home at all, i.e. without always having to plug the thing into the dock to get it to run on the TV? If not that's Wii U compatibility with any games that utilise two screens gone out-the-box. And does that also mean you couldn't even play a title like Super Mario Run on it, despite the core tablet looking exactly like a traditional tablet/smartphone? Seems like a strange decision/omission if that's the case.
Can you use a stylus at all on that screen? If not that's potential Wii U and even DS/3DS compatibility gone out-the-box for a whole bunch of titles too.
Is the Switch basically a very underpowered home console combined with a very powerful portable (with a few possible configurations) and little more?
I wanted a system that combines those two things, home console and handheld, BUT I didn't want to lose all that other great stuff in the process (stylus input, touch, dual screen, etc). I honestly believe the Switch could have given us both (all), and it not doing so (if that's the case) just makes it feel like the Wii and Wii U all over again to me, where the gimmick on one hand is cool, potentially very cool, but not at the cost of all the other stuff I absolutely want too (and quite reasonably could have gotten with a few slight tweaks to the basic design here and there).
In a vacuum the Switch is a great little device in its own right, but Nintendo now has such a history of both great and unique consoles to build on and leaving them behind in many important ways isn't the dream for me personally. And the Switch also isn't competing in a vacuum so it can't just be a great little device in its own right; I don't think that will be enough to make it a success in the extremely competitive current gaming market. It's basically needs to be the be-all-and-end-all of Nintendo console systems (which now happens to be a hybrid) with no major compromises (at the very least not when compared relative to Nintendo's own previous gaming systems).
Maybe Nintendo will reveal that all of that stuff is still possible and it's not basically making a whole bunch of the same kind of mistakes again (as I see them at least); I guess I'll see. . . .
Got to say.. looks pretty cool!!
I'm glad the system will have the traditional classic controller with a normal d-pad, I know I probably will avoid the terrible tablet one as I won't be playing this on the go.
Definitely going to buy, but I probably would have done regardless. Also, perhaps everyone who gave Emily Rogers a hard time can give her a bit more credit in future?
DAY 1 DAY 1 SO HYPPPPPPPPPPED
It's perfect......
@plug313 Well, it is the first hybrid console...by technicality. PlayStation has already done a similar concept with the PS TV. Granted, that's with two systems instead of one. But still. I'll be looking forward to seeing how the average consumer responds to the system...
I saw no kids or family in the video so thats good nintendo aiming for mature crowd this time.
@freaksloan I'm always impressed how people can develop such conviction about product purchases after seeing precious little information. "Day 1" comments often also fall into this category.
I find it hard to understand how the concept of unclippabe controllers (that don't ever need to be used thanks to the Pro Controller) are so reviling that, no matter what games are released for the console, you're going to unconditionally boycott it for 2 to 3 years.
Between the Pro Controller and the TV Base Station, there's no need to think of it as any different from any home console released ever. We don't know the game lineup. But for some reason, the existence of various optional functionalities is off-putting enough that you can confidently commit to not buying the system for several years. It seems very odd.
It might have all the games you love, and be playable the same way you've played any other game. But for some reason, that's been overridden by some playing options you don't have to ever think about.
It's a Vita... with more breakable parts.
@liljmoore how is a portable console a "new concept" exactly? This is basically a portable console that can plug on a TV, period. There's nothing wrong with that, but it's not a new concept, Sony did it with their brand for years.
@Moon Good questions. There was slightly suggestive language in the nvidia blog page about how they are the core technology in the switch. Nothing concrete, but it seems like it might be possible to cool better and get better performance.
NO TOUCHSCREEN!? For me that's a big step backwards, especially for a handheld, but then again I can see them purposefully not showing it to keep the message simple and on point: the console experiences you love (dual analog games on one screen) be brought to the toilet...err... rooftop cafe and played with local multiplayer. That's very solid. Still, from the handheld perspective we've been going backwards in innovative, unique gameplay-hardware since the DSi, losing most stylus and touch based games, dual screen emphasis, and now possibly 3D tech, AR, and touch altogether? I don't love that.
There is that big flat space between the Joy-Cons on the standard dock which could very well be touch sensitive, and the material on the Pro looks very distinct if final build. Hmmm....
Bummed that pico projector rumor didn't pan out, but new Splatoon footage made up for it. So fresh!!!
@Nin10doh "he's putting the headphones in it looks like a fan exhaust which probably addresses your heat issue"
Half a century later Nintendo enter the biomechanic industry, and introduces "Nintendo being" the step up from VR. Day 1 of purchase, an estimate 100,000 bow to their new overlords.
@ningeek185 Nintendo also showed off NBA 2K and Mass Effect (and Need for Speed) when the Wii U debuted.
Jury is still out for me. I'll believe it when the 3rd parties STAY AROUND.
The trailer is why I have a dislike for leaks.
What I was like after hearing rumours that the NX is a hybrid and has detachable controllers: "That sounds like a joke. It's convoluted and won't work well and sounds expensive and won't sell."
What I'm like now after the official trailer: "Wow, they did a good job with it and it looks so simple to use. I wants that"
@SheldonRandoms SWITCHED
@riChchestM
When the Vita played PS3/PS4 games, were you able to leave ur house while playing that game? If not, you're wrong.
Seriously, THIS IS FREAKING AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!
@BensonUii WAY ahead of you. Already got that link from another live stream...
@rjejr maybe the "real" secret isn't out yet...
Nintendo Switch.. we took the Wii U, removed the touch screen, dual screen play, motion controls and made the controllers detachable and we will sell it to you as a good thing - Nintendo.
Pretty much exactly what everyone expected. Personally, I couldn't care less about portable gaming so this new concept doesn't do anything for me. Still holding out hope that the base unit is more than just a dock and will include an additional processor to improve the fidelity of games when plugged in. I will still get one because I am a life-long Nintendo fan and love their games, but I was hoping for something a little more traditional. I am glad to see, however, that it's generating a lot of excitement among gamers.
I dont feel as WOWED as i wanted to, i do like it, but need to know more about it, need to see more games. I know this is just a brief first look to shut the world up, but it just didnt meet the wait or the hype for me. Show me Metroid and ill change that in a heartbeat.
No way in hell anyone is playing NBA 2K on those portable "controllers" lol but nice attempt, Nintendo.
If I end up getting one, this thing will be docked near my TV 95% of the time.
Day 1.
@AVahne Please avoid using the r-word. Thanks.
DAY 1 SO MUCH HYPE
@rjejr Haha Yes, I was just running through things that I'd like to know about. I was thinking, will the MyNintendo strategy change and really come into its own with Switch? I hope so because at present, it's a little lackluster to the say the least. How will it integrate with my current games too? Lack of touchscreen would rule out backwards compatibility, so any deal to transfer over to Switch equivalents? I don't want to buy all those games again, but if there were upgraded versions of some games I might buy those providing the price and experience were good enough.
@Ed_Fairway right, i'm not down on anyone who's excited about it, just not necessarily the person who is committed to all things Nintendo. i'm a relative newcomer, so i want to know more before i'm convinced.
i honestly hope it's a success for them, tho. i think that would be great after some rough years. variety in gaming is a good thing.
I can now see all the screen scratches when kids put it in the dock.
@atariman This won't play PS4 games on a handheld. PS3 maybe. So better than 3DS in terms of power, but slower than a PS4 for a home console. You'd be lucky to get 5 hours battery life too.
It's a kneejerk reaction to mobile and most of the use cases in the trailer are plain silly.
@Ed_Fairway
THANK YOU!
You have my deepest gratitude. Future generations will thank you.
I'm surprised they didn't show off smash bros definitive edition, I'm still hoping its real
POWAAAA! UNLIMITED POWAAAAA!
I do wonder if 3rd party support will again just pretty much consist of ports of old games, which may not sell too well due to the price difference, but I guess will be helped by the fact they'll be fully portable.
@Frank90 Yep, I just watched the trailer with two of my friends who haven't owned a Nintendo console since the GameCube and they said they think it looks really cool and they're interested in it.
@RoomB31 yeah you're right , all i want right now is to play a new splatoon title , but a port will do !
@InternetBowser There is a Sun and Moon announcement on the 27th. It could happen.
@impurekind I'm hoping that the Switch can stream to the dock in the same way the Wii U streams to the gamepad, so therefore allowing 2-screen titles to be played.
@gcunit If it could, you would think they would have showed that in the video. It seems strange that they wouldn't. Also the Breath of the Wild demo had no second screen map. The evidence is against it.
So it's not even as powerful as a PS4 or XB1?
Gee, thanks Nintendo. They just don't get it do they?
So, did they rent a whole airport, a plane, a stadium, another stadium and a van just to film this video?
Most expensive 3 minutes ever.
@Emperor-Palpsy If it uses a Tegra 2 it should match the XB1, but it won't be quite as strong as the PS4.
@Emperor-Palpsy I'm sure it's not, but was that already confirmed? They are going for portability of a home console over power.
It's worked before.... maybe works again?
Notice that a few things were not shown AT ALL:
No motion controls!
No sensor bar (lack of backwards compatibility for wii-mote)!
No touch screen!
Personally, I think these are good things, a complete break from Wii and Wii U. I'm very very very excited for this!!!!
@doll ". i'm a relative newcomer, so i want to know more before i'm convinced." And you should, better to drop a stone before dropping yourself in. "Variety in gaming is a good thing" an individual after my own heart
@iGen Don't thank me (well maybe a little ) Thank my unconditional love of the underdog
@BenAV I am so happy to see the dual screen idea go away.
Does anyone know if this screen has touch capability ?
I already have a confirmed pre-order of the Nintendo Switch.
Dear Jason Burrows
Your pre-order for Nintendo Switch Console has been received.
BotW looked like it took a huge frame rate hit in the portable version.
@ThanosReXXX Masses of details still to come, but I think a discussion of the specs and the actual playability versus cost will be important in seeing this fly or flail with certain markets. I might love the idea, but there are other markets and I'd find it interesting to see what those demographics think. Can it compete? Does it have to?
@aaronsullivan Well, that picture I posted are Nintendo's own quotes. All the leakers and theorizers on YouTube and Twitter are dying right now, all except the Blue-haired dragon and Ms. Rogers...
BOUT TIME YA DUMMIES. Oh well... at least I'm not apathetic about it.
Not a bad job. The screen is full on tablet sized, so that's nice. I guess (hope) they'll now do a proper Direct or show where they can talk extensively about the games. I saw that new Splatoon (hairstyles)
@Sakura Don't know about cost, but if it contains an X2 chip, then the $299 - $349 price point might be correct. And I'm not convinced yet on it competing. Depends on how all this third party support pans out. The list of third parties is quite a lot bigger than with the Wii and Wii U, but we'll first have to wait and see what comes of it.
@ThanosReXXX "maybe the "real" secret isn't out yet..."
Probably not though. And I woudln't even have bothered to reply but the didn't show up in the email.
And PE isn't dieing, he's singing"hail Emily" and making everybody type her name in his live stream. You may have to "unsubscribe" from his YT channel. I might have too, he's gloating way too much for somebody who I thought was 50-50 like I was.
Love the new “-“ and “+” buttons, they look awesome xD
Just by looking at the game developers confirmed, there is a lot of great potential games that could come to this system: GTA, Bioshock, Skyrim, Fallout, The Evil Within, DOOM, Dishonored, Wolfenstein, Street Fighter, Resident Evil, EA Sports Games, Star Wars Battlefront, Battlefield, Titanfall 2, Mass Effect, Dark Souls, No More Heroes, Lollipop Chainsaw, Killer 7, Metal Gear Solid, Bayonetta, Sonic the Hedgehog, Final Fantasy, Assassin's Creed, Watch Dogs 2, Paragon.
That is a great amount of third party games to choose from, so lets hope people actually buy the system and support the third party this time around, so we can get great third party games for this system.
Looks incredible
Absolutely A-mazing! I'm all in, can't wait.
Portable co-op. That's a must for me and the wife :]
Well time to pick up additional hours at work...
@rjejr Guess I have to commend you for not being so stupid as to go all or nothing, like me. So, well done, sir.
Omg, This looks so cool.
Many thoughts on it... my first ones were: How is Nintendo going to handle lost or stolen detachable controllers from the mobile component?
I wonder if they dropped the touchscreen entirely since it would be useless in "home-mode" (which it was kinda was on Wii U anyway).
I would be cool if they told us when there would be more info on this thing.
It looks pretty nice. But hardcore gamers will stick with PS4. And most parents will prefer to buy their kids a chinese 50-100 euro tablet. Wii was damn cheap, thats why it was a success. I don't know how many people will be able to afford to spend 350-400 dollars to switch...
@ThanosReXXX "Don't know about cost, but if it contains an X2 chip, then the $299 - $349 price point might be correct"
If that is the case, I'll probably wait out until the right moment, see how it plays out before I make decision. So thank you for your wisdom
100k likes fast approaching...
Love the spin people are doing here
"IT'S EXACTLY LIKE A WII U/VITA!" (except these great features that either or both of those systems didn't have that I will just casually dismiss).
err yeah sure. Whatever I guess.
@rjejr
Uhhh. Let me get this straight. It plays games on TV as a console. It does everything any other console does. With console graphics and pro controller like any other console.
But the fact you're getting MORE bang for your buck by being portable also, that suddenly categorizes it as handheld and therefore it's not for you???
Your logic sometimes man...
This thing does everything a console does and more. But because it does more, you don't want it? It has a zillion times the support of the last Nintendo console, which you bought.
I don't get it. Yes this is a handheld, but that doesn't mean it's not a console. The two are not mutually exclusive with Switch. So saying "I'm not a handheld gamer". That's great. You don't have to be. Cause this is every bit as much a console as it is handheld
The NVIDIA Tegra announcement (hopefully X2, if it's X1 then it will be immediately obsolete) confirms that the NX will not compete for power, once again. (And no, I'm not going to use the Switch name... Just going to keep calling it NX)
However, since it will be a (sort of) home console, (sort of) portable console, and (mostly) mobile device all in one, this is understandable. So it really is more of a hybrid device, rather than a family of devices for each role. Instead, there will probably be different specs offered in the "family" line.
@A01 Re-watch the trailer! It looks lower resolution on handheld (most likely the scale Down Tech to optimize battery life), but when it's docked and switches to the TV it definitely looks like the New upscaled Skyrim!
Glad to see like Bethesda is in there as a developer.
I really want to play their games, but my current PC can't handle them :/
Hoping for Dishonored 2, Fallout or DOOM (even if it's a bit of a stretch :<)
@YANDMAN Metroid Prime: Federation Force port coming your way!
The Splatoon that is shown is also at least an updated version. (Along with Mario Kart which shows King Boo and two item slots) The Inklings have different "hair" styles! I've been very skeptical about this system, after all, I'm nowhere near being done with my Wii U and 3DS, and I'm very sad to see them die, but I'm suddenly excited for this. I hope the battery life is insane in this thing.
Awesome. I want one.
@ThanosReXXX Still hanging in there huh, I'm impressed. People giving you a hard time, I can't keep up myself. I don't like any of the execution so far. I do think it's funny the 1 and only thing I was 100% about was 100% wrong. Good thing I told you I didn't care about that months ago. Maybe NS will be able to get ports b/c how dominant they are in the PC industry?
I'm still holding out though. I'm still mad about the lack of map in Zelda U, I can't go back to single screen gaming, so that's a step back for me right there. And it IS the reason Zelda had it pulled, 2nd screen is not a distraction, worked great in WW HD and XCX. Screw Anouma. I'll play Zelda on my Wii U, thanks. And how is Splatoon supposed to work now that everybody was so happy to see it? Did anybody stop to ask themselves that? I'm all about the details, not the glossy 3 minutes.
So I'll wait for the Home version w/o a 2nd screen w/ detachable controllers, just give me the dock and good controller, not those nasty little toys.
You hear from @Captain_Gonru about fitting the tablet in is pocket yet? I dont 'think ti's gonna fit.
Apart from the lack of Wii/Wii U stuff in the presentation, no double screen or stylus... so backwards compatibility with DS/3DS software would be out of the question, either through carts or emulated? (Don't know if that screen has touch sensors.)
Will we be able to play games with touch and/or motion contol with Switch?
@ThanosReXXX Well I did go all in on no Nvidia, and look where that got us. It wasn't a matter or smart or stupid, it was just what I believed, and I couldn't believe in anything 100%. And looking at that wall blocking the screen I still can't believe it. So fugly.
Are you and @Sakura discussing power as well as price? That huge cradle must have another Tegra chip in it for TV out, thing is freaking huge. Heck, it's even bigger than I said a home console would be, so it must have a N64 RAM pack like device in it running SLI. Would 2 X1 chips be cheaper and more powerful than 1 Parker?
@gatorboi352 "If I end up getting one, this thing will be docked near my TV 95% of the time."
Where that $50 or $60 screen we are paying for will be sitting behind a wall. It's not even showing us the time or weather or Miiverse or which friends are online. Nintendo is making us pay for a screen, and making us pay for a dock to block that screen, when we play on our tvs.
Sorry, I know we're not on speaking terms, but everybody else is so happy to be playing on the go, not too many home gamers here, that sentence caught my attention.
@gcunit I really do hope so, but not seeing it anywhere in the video, just like I couldn't see any stylus or slot for a stylus on the device or even any examples of using the screen for touch at all, makes me think probably not.
@PlywoodStick The Nintendo Switch uses the latest NVidia Tech based on Pascal architecture!
So, when docked and you play on TV it will be at least on par with XboxOne and PS4, most likely even matching the upcoming PS4 Pro, which will have performance similar to the GeForce 1060 GFX card. ( 4,2 TFLOPS )
@RoomB31
Kind of like a 2DS I suppose
@Ed_Fairway Just saw someone in the Nvidia forum say that it is apparently confirmed to be based off of Pascal/X2, so that price point does seem fair indeed. Not sure until officially confirmed, though. X2 was kind of expected if it was going to be Nvidia, though. X1 is much too old and if they wanted to make third parties happy, it had to at least be on par with Xbox One and this will do that.
@impurekind To a certain extent, I'm holding out some hope that the video was made using a prototype that doesn't necessarily fully represent the finished design.
400+ comments in just 2 hours? THAT shows you the gravity of this reveal.
Also betting the trailer has "301+ views" on YouTube.
Honestly I was looking up NX news every day for the past month in the run up to this, and it's great to have that off my shoulders at last! Oh yeah, and the console looks good, obvs.
@NopeNope hi there, as you may notice, your username has been replaced. Your previous one was considered inappropriate, please don't do it again.
Anyone know if the display is a touchscreen?
@rjejr Funny that you call it NS, that's the acronym for the Dutch Railways. A different kind of hype train...
And I'm not having that much of a hard time really, so all things considered, all that is left to do is calm down, swallow the pill and move on...
@Stubborn_Monkey I would say there is a fairly good chance of compatibility, but the new controllers are likely to be Bluetooth.
Well at least Switch will have amiibo support which makes me lean towards it having a touchscreen...
Getting hyped for the new mario game as well. Here is hoping for a hyrule warriors sequel or a port of legends with all the 3ds features as well.
Nintendo is like "Thank you for your money, come again!"
@rjejr Yeah, the hide the screen thing will divide some punters, for sure. Me, I don't mind all that much. Don't want a second screen distracting me when I'm playing on TV.
@Jeronan The Scorpio and PS4 Pro hardware will be immediately outdated upon release compared to the PC market, so it wouldn't be too difficult for the upcoming Tegra X2 to match them. Pascal will offer many efficiency benefits for the mobile market, and it seems the NX can benefit from this greatly.
However, it remains to be seen whether the Tegra X2 can actually compete with a discrete graphics card of the same model- I highly doubt it. It will use a mobile version of a discrete card's processor, which in other words means it will be significantly weaker than the GTX 1060 in benchmarks and in practice. This is especially true when considering the $250 6GB model, but it's still true when considering the $200 3GB model.
The NX's real world performance (due to needing to process in multiple different ways, not just one way like on a PC) would probably be more closely comparable to a GTX 1050 or GTX 1050 Ti, which reside in the $100-$150 price bracket. If the NX is going to have a reasonable price ($350 or less to compete with Sony/Microsoft) then this is the level of performance we can expect.
@Wonky_Kong They didn't show it being used as one, but I would say that there is almost no way it isn't. The component that makes any screen a touch screen is called a "digitizer" and is a very cheap component.
Definitely gonna have to get it day 1! Also, the Mario Kart footage and Splatoon footage has me fascinated. That's definitely MK 8, but there's 2 item slots and King Boo racing! WTF? Also, is that Splatoon 2? Graphically it looks the same, but everything else looks new.. I want answers Nintendo!
@gcunit I'd love to imagine that were the case; I don't think it is even for one second. But, God would it make me happy if I were wrong.
@PlywoodStick Which would still put the NX well above the PS4 and XBOne, which is impressive for this Hybrid console.
Though, seeing how the Skyrim footage definitely upscaled drastically when the handheld docked and switched to the TV, it might be that the dock holds extra GPU to boost Processing Power.
@ThanosReXXX Guess I won't be a day one buyer then
By the way, first, like the icon, second, could you send me a link please.
A single multi purpose device, does this mean the end of the Nintendo ecosystem (home console and handheld) ?
@gcunit
Which one?
@JaxonH Yeah, I can see it your way, I'm still taking it all in.
But the best thing about the Wii U for me was the map in XCX and WW HD. This thing has a Gamepad type controller, but you have to dock in behind a wall to play on the TV, so no dual screen gaming? But I have to pay for the screen. And for the wall to hide the screen behind? And I like dual screen gaming.
So, for you to say "This thing does everything a console does and more." is kind of a lie. It does do what PS4 and X1S do, but not what I liked most about Wii U. So for me it's a step back.
Now, I could be wrong, maybe this does work like a Gamepad and wirelessly conneccts to that dock for dual screen play, but we haven't seen that yet. If we do, I'll change my mind.
And you should know better by now, glass half full, glass half empty, remember? You always see the best in things, I always see the worst, we discuss things and work our way towards the middle, we both come out ahead, that's just how it works with us.
Do you not recall me going off the deep end when they took the map out of Zelda at E3? I was livid for 3 whole days. @ThomasBW84 probably remembers, he nearly had to ban me from the site I was so hysterical, but then he sort of almost apologized in the end.
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2016/06/video_see_even_more_of_the_legend_of_zelda_breath_of_the_wild_with_eiji_aonuma_and_nintendo_minute
So no, it's not just a matter of sour grapes or anything, I'm just not currently overly fond of the design. It could grow on me I suppose. I also don't like the home controller being made out of those parts, just make a solid 1, I don't need a jigsaw puzzle, I'm a lazy SOB.
@Jeronan Indeed, it does call into question the validity of the PS4Pro's and Scorpio's place in the modern world, where a Nintendo mobile device can compete with them power wise, and decent custom built PC rigs smoke them.
I think you're right about the dock allowing streamlining of processing, and the result should be quite an improvement compared to other efforts in the past, like the PSP's component connection and VitaTV. Still won't compete with PC's and mods for Skyrim in particular, but nevertheless impressive, and far more appealing than Nintendo's direct competition.
@Honelith
Might help with speed? The new UFS card standard has a bunch more contacts than micro SD which I thinj is for higher speeds, so these extra long contacts might serve tje same purpose.
@johnodaz You aren't the first comment I've read commenting on how it looks "cheap" wtf are you comparing it to? The plastics look identical to something from XBOX One or PS4. Is this just a canned response?
I gotta know what the load times are like. If we're going to solid state storage will it be load times like the 3DS (I sure hope not.) or the Super Nintendo (Yes please)
@BenAV
I have ABSOLUTELY no desire for any more dual-screen systems. I hope this is the death of that irritating gimmick. Give me a big, beautiful screen and fill it with amazing games. DIE, DS, DIE!
I haven't been this thrilled with a Nintendo handheld since the Game Boy Advance.
@rjejr
I dig the concept but I am concerned about it's dual screen capabilities as well. In addition to your points about the Wii U Gamepad providing the convenience of displaying maps/inventory during real time gameplay, it was very useful for giving the second player a whole screen to themselves in 2-player co-op games that would normally split the TV screen.
If the Switch can't provide dual screen gameplay I'm hoping, at the very least, it'll be compatible with the Wii U Gamepad for this kind of an option.
What Nintendo showed let clear tehe console will be good. But yet the big part is to be showed: More from games.
@rjejr
Alot of ppl knocked Wii U for its dual screen gaming and I think maybe they wanna distance themselves from it. It may have a screen but that doesn't automatically mean dual screen gaming could have been included free. The cost of the wireless technology, the cost of processor speed needed to output 2 images (remember even you complained about how Star Fox Zero and other systems took automatically a visual hit), and the alienation I causes 3rd parties.
While I would have appreciated it, I think this potentially was the better decision.
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES! THIS IS PERFECT! I JUST CANNOT EVEN!
@rjejr Well, I've definitely been thinking about specs and that's why I'm thinking cost versus actual playability might be a factor. Actual playability is a loose term, but what I mean is does the play exerience of Switch match up to the play experience on Xbone and PS4? If it doesn't, does that matter if the experience is good enough? Xbone and PS4 aren't as powerful as PCs and still selling relatively well.
I'm also not keen on the detachable controllers. The UK website says "Detachable controllers reinvent gaming". Well, I was thinking of leaving those on the device and using a pro controller with TV. Not sure they should focus on that aspect. Also hope they are sold separately because they are sure to get lost or stood on. Are they to be used as extra controllers for multiplayer too?
@ThanosReXXX Pascal? That actually raises my expectations a little that perhaps the differences won't be quite as big as they might be. Now, I like the portable, dock-with-the-TV concept anyway, but more power makes it even more appealing. I hope that's true. And always appreciated your comments.
Any possibility that the tablet portion could have a film or book store, interent access, actually function as a tablet? No indication of that, but just wondering.
@JaxonH I agree with your comment. It is a home console plus more. If someone doesn't like handheld gaming, they should consider it off tv play. I read the silliest complaints here.
kinda looks like they compromised the d-pad there
Couldn't be happier
@Jeronan @PlywoodStick "Pascal will offer many efficiency benefits for the mobile market"
Since it seems most of the rumours were correct, that means the SCD rumour is probably also correct. Nvidia invented SLI. Stick a Tegra chip in the tablet, stick another in the base, stick a 3rd in a N64 RAM pack, you got yourself 1 heck of a little machine.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scalable_Link_Interface
Read what that RAM pak did, higher res, mutilplayer, more FPS, way ahead of it's time.
http://nintendo.wikia.com/wiki/Nintendo_64_Expansion_Pak
The probably 720p tablet screen doens't need much, a SLI dock could improve things on the 1080p TV. SCD could maybe even do 4k?
Lots of room in that dock. Hopefully an audio processor to turn the tablet stereo to tv 5.1. I need surround sound.
I have to say I'm very excited for the new console. I'm also very pleased that Nintendo showed off everything I wanted to see. It's as if they were reading my post on what what I hoped to see. Mario Kart (with King Boo shown), the new Mario and Splatoon. It was a given that Breath of the Wild would be shown, but to also include Skyrim Remastered was just amazing.
Being honest the console does look slightly flimsy but I am really impressed with what I saw and will preorder as soon as humanly possible. I see how it's like the Wii U but more versitile in controller options. It seems all of the controllers are likely Bluetooth and will add to the mobility. Will definitely be taking this with me on trips and the TV dock looks nice although you won't be able to see the screen when docked, so no dual display. We'll see if this is the one console to replace the DS and console lines. If so development turnaround times will be greatly reduced not splitting their teams into console and mobile. So again I'm very excited for the new console and can't wait to see more.
@feelinsupersonic True, but unlike the Wii U GamePad, it seems like this one will go to market since production has already begun. Still the all around design looks comfortable enough with both controllers.
all i can say is yeah its game on time
love it cant wait to play on it
@3MonthBeef #354 "Home is where the heart is"
That would actually be a very clever advertisement slogan!
@yomanation So, what was the source of your confidence then, other than what you yourself suspected? Now that the secret is out, I'm still waiting on that answer, even though the point is now a bit moot, but I just hate untied ends...
@AVahne Interesting, thanks!
That is pretty slick.
Looks pretty neat, and I see other companies (especially Sony, since their Vita sales fell flat) copying the idea of it...even cell phone companies I can see copying it. Other than that, there's still many questions I have about it, and one comes with the graphics, as I'm wondering if it's the same kind of graphics that the Wii U had, which isn't really a step up and means that we'd still be seeing big name games not being released on the console. Other than that, the controller (the one attached to the console) looks really small, but it also looks like it's a small Wii remote and Nunchuck combined to it...the classic controller still looks great and I hope the battery life is good on all of them. The only other questions I had was if they are finally putting some trophy/achievement into their games (which for some reason, add replay value and more quick fun to certain games), but also if 3DS and DS games will be playable on it, but I don't see them telling people about the latter question until after the holiday season (as it would hurt some of the 3DS sales). It's a good touch tough, and I hope (for the people who didn't own a Wii U, just like Sony did with PS4 for people who did not own a PS3) that they re-release some of their Wii U classic titles (Super Mario 3D World, Pikmin 3, Yoshi's Wooly World, The Wonderful 101, Lego City Undercover) and a few others, even though, if it's not able to use Wii Remotes, I don't see it happening.
Another question was if you could have more than one tablet hooked up into the one system you own. This is something that many complained about with the Wii U's tablet. It would be nice to be able to play with a friend or family member with the same game and system, rather than having to go out and buy another console and another copy of the game. I was also wondering if one of the rumors...being that you can use a USB Stick for extra memory, is true too.
@Sakura "Well, I was thinking of leaving those on the device and using a pro controller with TV."
Didnt like that part in the vid when he took his controller apart to put the tablet back together. It makes sense to have the controllers come out, kids today love their tablets, but make a complete Pro controller, don't make me go messing w/ that much nonsense. You can see the dock is made to keep the controllers on the tablet - that part I do like, it was important to me they do that, allow them to remain attached - but just make a solid 1 piece Pro. Don't make he HAVE to take them of to play.
And yes, I need to know about the tablets funcitonality. I'm sur eit will have a web browser and Miiverse, but it needs something similar to Google Play - email, Skype, mobile games. Of course we still need to see the tocuh screen in action. Seems some peopel are worried it isn't a otuch screen. I think Nintneod is just holding out to show off multi-tocuh since 3DS and WiiU ae both single touch. Though that's just a guess, could be wrong.
But if it's a tablet tablet, w/ multitocuh and Google Store and easy WiFi everywhere - 3DS is such a pain - then that improves it's value tremendously for me. I buy a new 7" Android tablet every 2 years.
@Yorumi You probably have to buy the classic controller separate, which is fine as long as the price isn't $50 or more, or it's a way to sell many of those Pro Controllers that weren't sold with the Wii U's.
What worries me is the screen! Def gonna a big screen protector. Also a carrying case! It's huge! I love it! But gonna need a briefcase for this thing.
That's what I loved about the DS line I could close it and it powered save mode and screen wasn't exposed. Gonna miss that Clam Shell design. I Hope the Switch has a instant sleep button.
I'm also a big fan of the name and glad Nintendo is ditching the "Wii" name. Now they just need to clarify if this is just the new home console with mobility, or if this also replaces the DS line. I would assume the later.
The only design flaw that I could see with this, is when the clicks end of hooking the controllers and dock back up...you know eventually, that'll create some kind of debate.
@rjejr Now that this is the final picture, we can theorize from there. My guess is that the dock contains the important parts of a standard "PC" graphics card from Nvidia, which would explain what they claim on their own blog. Because the tech is based off of Pascal and X2, so a mix n match of the two. And that is indeed an SLI setup boosting the power of the handheld.
The Expansion Pak was nothing like that though. I don't like that comparison and it's not correct either. That was just a static RAM module, nothing more. It had no additional CPU or GPU, which this probably will have.
Saw those USB 3.0 ports on it, so storage will probably indeed be external again, or SD card slot.
Here's a nice overview picture of all the functionalities shown so far:
Right-click and view image for larger view...
@Yorumi "it can do 2-player with one system"
My bigger concern is can it do multi owner? 3DS only lets you use 1 NNID, Wii U a lot more than that. I'm worried if it's only 1 account like 3DS that won't work well as a Home console. Hopefully w/ all of the NNIDs n the world Nintendo makes it multi like Wii U. But I'll worry until we know.
@Galactus_33 Maybe they'll release some form of openable faceplate like I have on my Vitas.
Oh and yes a good travel case as this thing will be going everywhere with me.
@BenAV As far as Switch potentially being the end of dual-screen handhelds, all the children I see in public with single-screen tablets don't seem to mind.
Well after watching the trailer I'm definitely Switching .
About the only thing i wonder is battery life.
I'll be dammed, I feel lucky first console I can afford on launch day, $500 reserved for this today, this is a killer deal, now I can walk head high in front of my xbone friends lol
@rjejr That would be really neat, but it would be confusing for the average consumer who is not so tech savvy if there will be different SKU's. I can tell it's already going to be difficult to explain this myriad of usage methods that were displayed in the preview. If the whole system does have not one but two Tegra X2 or comparable chips, then the NX will probably cost closer to $400-$500... Which is not nearly as attractive as the $300-$350 it's currently looking like.
Nevertheless, I can see a single SKU of this setup being quite popular. Not really reinventing the wheel so much, but very familiar to many at this point. And yes, I can easily see the controller components being lost or stolen, and Nintendo having a nightmarish situation trying to deal with that in their online store and repair workshops.
This means that every game company knows for a fact that every person playing the game has two controllers with them at all times. Which means that it's easy to share a controller for some quick 2 player action, anywhere, and if it's on a bus, or at a cafeteria or any public space really, it's great publicity, if the gameplay is compelling.
@Yorumi I buy travel cases for all my gadgets, extra costs and bulk for sure but its helped them all stay safe from drops and such.
Has a portable charger been confirmed? I wish the docking station had been slightly smaller so I could play on the big screen when visiting family over Christmas. But this is a minor point, don't mind playing on a small screen. Heck I use my Vita more than my Vita TV.
@Nintendo_Thumb I travel on a 2+ hr train journey at least once a month, end up conversing with the person next to me many times so may end up offering them some multiplayer. I better always keep the Mario Kart cartridge with me.
@ThanosReXXX "That was just a static RAM module, nothing more. It had no additional CPU or GPU, which this probably will have."
We don't know about the SCD yet though, it could just be more RAM like the N64 pak, coudln't it? The dock - guess you've dealt w/ it huh? - I wouldn't call the RAM pak, more like a 2nd NS. RAM pak would be something more later down the line.
Good catch on the 3.0 USB, 2.0 is so slow.
@BenAV If the controllers could lock in the top and bottom edges they could fit dual screen games in landscape mode.. maybe Nintendo has thought of this Probably doesn't matter though because from the looks of things there is no touchscreen. Touchscreen would complicate things too much though as that feature would only work when it's not docked. Nintendo is going back to their roots of just games with a gamepad like Sony and MS. I think that was a great decision because now 3rd parties will be swarming to the Switch. Portable Skyrim and Zelda? Holy crap. This thing is going to SELL
Count me 100% in. Love it and can't want. I do hope that's Unbreakable glass on the tablet lol. It's a thing of beauty though. Exactly what I have had invisioned.
@FX102A I have a feeling that in addition to the dock there will also use a charge cable and AV out for a more portable setup.. I hope
Now I don't know whether to get this cos it looks great, xbone for Gears 4, or PS4 for Persona 5!! 😂 My poor wallet!!
@Zeeman I meant pressure sensitive. In the video, we see buttons that looks like those of the Wiiu Gampad...
@rjejr There's a one piece pro controller in the pics, as well as the one cobbled together from the joy-cons, That was the one I'd like to be able to use. It has d-pad too. More details needed on compatibility for all the different controller options. Can you do multiplayer with pro controllers or is it joy-con only?
@Yorumi That's a really good point. Easy playing on the go. But the left and right hand joy-cons are mirror images of each other so does that mean each side is optimised for either right-hand or left-hand players with the stick in a different place on each side? I'm hoping for real controller choice with a few different options, but I can appreciate your point that it does make it easy to share the game experience. This might be a thing that I need to feel in my hands.
@Ed_Fairway A link to my avatar? Can't have nobody else using the Mad Titan's image, now can we?
If you go to my profile page and then save the bigger size picture, you can use that to Google in image mode. I honestly have no idea from what page or website I got it from.
I used to have another one, but I got tired of it, so I just Googled "Thanos" and this is one of the pics that came up.
No motion controls? ....?
@RamrodDestroyer glad to see someone else is thinking in da same direction as I am
Me before the reveal: "I'm still feeling burned about my Wii U. Screw you, Nintendo!"
Me after the trailer: "Yes, Amazon. Notify me when the Switch is available for preorder."
Where is the "new concept for gaming"? I don't see how the kit function of the console will impact games. For now, it doesn't look like it will bring anything new.
Anyway, if the battery makes it a good portable console, the button extensions don't worn out too fast and there is a way to play on the screen device while charging it up (like any regular handheld), I'll be interested (to look at what it offers 12-18months later)
@rjejr LOL we are on speaking terms, it is fine.
YEah I dunno, unless this thing is $250 it will not be a day one purchase for me. My X1 is suiting me just fine for the time being.
@Yorumi If they make them easy to configure, then that would would be excellent. Not sure how easy that is to implement, but it's certainly possible on other controllers to map the buttons to certain functions and they surely know what they're doing better than I do, so in that case, seems to have lots of potential. Big selling point for children and as a multiplayer device.
@Yorumi Doesn't it depend on what shape the Switch's charging port will be? Although very sure that if Ninty doesn't release one (highly unlikely but probably will be sold seperately) a 3rd party will.
Also yes, although the DS/3DS clam shell protects it, I like to avoid scrates on the outside too. I should really get a see-through outer clip on cover.
I would speculate that there may be a "mobile" bundle with just the tablet and joy-cons, and a "home" bundle that includes the docking station and joy-con grip.
I'm sure this has been mentioned in this massive thread before but.... man that portable aspect looks like a nightmare to control. Just doesn't look comfortable to hold and play on at all.
@feelinsupersonic LOL
@Sakura Your guess is as good as mine. Would be a nice addition, though. Just keep in mind that Nintendo has never been really big on multimedia, so this would be kind of a huge step for them, but who knows...
@gatorboi352 Single player looks fine to me. I thought the gamepad was quite comfortable. It also looks comfortable if you stand it up and detach the "joy-cons" and play like a wiimote and nunchuck. That was incredibly comfortable.
The multiplayer one-joy-con-a-person thing does look carpel tunnel inducing though.
@rjejr I'm still betting on my guess of an extra piece of hardware. Can't be this thick just for aesthetics's sake. And the back part is considerably thicker than the front...
I love it. Instabuy. Where do I preorder!?
"Hey come over to our awesome party, and bring your Nintendo Switch!"
"I'm afraid I can't as I've lost the left-hand side of it..."
Where was that lifestyle scenario?!
In all seriousness, this looks good. I like.
I'm so excited
Very very impressed with the marketing this time around, love the logo and the click noise too. I have a feeling this will do very well or at the very least a lot better than the wii U.
I have to admit, I'm so excited for this even more. I love how it looks. The games that they showed satisfied my taste for the first 6 months of the launch. BOTW, SkyRim(what), MarioKartNS, and SplatoonNS. I saw a Mario there too. This looks miles better than a N3DS. What I hope for:
Backwards compatible: 3DS, WiiU
Talk online
Account unification
VC on day 1
I do want it in white to match my iPhone or silver to match my Mac.
Tennis Channel
HBO go
Amazon Prime
Netflix
Hulu
A partridge and a pear tree.
Damn you Nintendo for being so innovative and awesome - perfectly executed reveal that means we understand it from the off, first and probably most important obstacle overcome.
Now for the details, like the base unit must add additional processing power or graphical capabilities, right?
I...
don't like it.
waits for hate
I guess it's alright... but I have to say I actually liked the Wii U's design a lot better.
Looks good to me. My birthday is in March and the Switch just made it to the top of my list.
If the new enhanced version of Skyrim is actually coming out on the Switch that means it is probably comparable to the PS4/XOne power wise. Bethesda wouldn't bother otherwise.
@ThanosReXXX I may have entered the realms of wishful-thinking there, but it sure is a nice place. Would love it to be a thing, but suppose they would have shown it off already if they thought it would be a big selling point.
Perhaps for the future though. BBC iPlayer, Netflix, Hulu have all been available (for a while before they canned much of it, anyway).
Looks great!
I haven't posted here in a while 'cause Nintendo has effectively been dead to me since the Wii U came along, but this three minute video just showed me that they still have a heartbeat.
Sleek design, clear message, sensible name... they're basically reversing all the mistakes they made with Wii U, AND by combining their portable and home console development studios it should get a decent stream of quality games.
I don't expect third party support to match PS4/Xbox levels for second, or that this machine will have the power of either of them. That doesn't bother me in the slightest, so long as Nintendo produce enough games of their own, it's a done deal.
Any chance the cartridge slot accepts and reads Nintendo 3DS games and there is a 3DS hyper visor software running on the Switch? Oh my gawd that would be so radical!!!!!!!!!! I can dream!! They did do this with the Wii U.. however that included some hardware so I doubt this will happen.
You hit it out of the park Nintendo! The console looks great, has an awesome name, it was a great presentation, and omg Bethesda on a Nintendo console!!!!!!!!!!! I can't contain the hype!!!
imo looks like disaster
@OneBagTravel It must be the colour or something just looked a whole lot of cheapness bu I did say looked and is. I know it's not gonna be cuz Nintendo is the Don .
@ThanosReXXX Some of that thickness has to be for audio. Have you ever seen a small home audio 5.1 system? Those things are always huge. That slot in the back is weird though. Man I hate that dock. Hate it more than you hated saying it. I just don't get it at all. I really thought it would be the charging cradle built into the top of the Wii U. Not that travesty.
Build it up in the back, let me see the screen.
I wonder What the haters are saying about it?
@SLIGEACH_EIRE That "circle" you are seeing is actually of the inside of the controller because the plastic is semi-transparent. Not that I'm saying the controller won't have interchangeable parts—I don't think it will though—but just that the circle is simply some internal component that's visible through the plastic. Or, at least that's what I am seeing and saw in any clips where I saw that controller in use. Could mean Nintendo's planning on a coloured range of Switch Pro controllers at some point though, much like it did with the transparent N64/controllers back in the day. That kind of transparent plastic really looks good in different colours. And it did in the recent semi-transparent 2DS systems too.
In the video, the only reason showed for why the controller elements on the left and right side of the NX, or Nintendo Switch, can be removed is to become independent tiny controllers for simple 2 player multiplayer on a single screen on the go, in addition to the the control pad now being changed to 4 buttons for that purpose, which I feel is a terrible trade off that most likely results in a less sturdy portable console build. How are they attached? Will I have to worry if I hold onto the Nintendo Switch with one hand that the pressure will cause the controller to slide off of the Switch and have the Switch fall on the floor? Considering the "2 player multiplayer on the go" function of the removable controllers results in simplified controls, it likely can only be used for party games like on the Wii. Nintendo seems to still be aiming for the "family around the couch" market, which worries me, when well, the non existent market for console games there is one of the reasons why the Wii U failed.
Im neutral about it (I'm not excited nor dissapointed about it)
@Peach64
This is not the same. Remote play requires the Vita & PS4 to have the same game on both for that to work.
@Alshain01
Yet it didn't seem to stop them from trying to make the Move & Kinect when the Wii took off. Infact, Sony is trying to get mileage out of the Move by having 2 be used with Playstation VR & Microsoft is sticking with Smartglass as a second screen.
@Hotfusion
Don't judge until we get the full tech report on the Switch.
@NopeNope I love that gif.
I hope it has amiibo functionality.
@BlatantlyHeroic Amen to that! We all need a portable Skyrim! I'm sold just for that one alone!
@kugtryne Go see the eye doctor mate
@yomanation Right...
I'll go over to the other thread, hard to keep bouncing back and forth. Haven't had a moment's rest since the trailer ended...
Love the name; we can call it NS!
@Shigmin Haha yes! I was hoping I wasn't the only one who noticed that!
@Sakura Like I said, who knows? Things have apparently changed, and so has Nintendo. Switching partners, switching ideas, so who knows what else they've adapted to? Let's wait and see what kind of additional info the coming weeks bring. After that investor meeting on the 26th they might give us a bit more intel.
@River3636 I still have tons of games on my Wii U, and some 3DS games they have yet to come out (Dragon Ball Fusions). Plus I need to wait on certain information: storage space, and price namely. I might wait until this time next yet to give the library some time to build up.
Apart from the current design-finish (looks bit too plastic-ish), and the old-school docking station design (cheap-ish) - its a good idea - i think. Having said that, I will buy it.
But I doubt there is hardware "inside" that will be able to compete with sony or microsoft....hopefully they design it at least in a way that it will be possible to upgrade somehow when needed and not to release some joke like new switch (new 3ds style) with minor enhancements in 2-3 years time.
@Thegentleman Yea that's the best position to be in. It looks great, but more information is definitely needed.
They even have From Software on the partners page so maybe there's a chance that Dark Souls would be on it.
@rjejr Audio in the system? That could be a chip incorporated on the PCB inside the dock. All it needs is that HDMI cable and the audio will come from your TV or surround set.
And we'll get used to it, you'll see...
Honestly, it looks like a natural progression from the Wii U. It's almost a Wii U +. Conceptually, it's a good idea. For someone like me, the multiplayer-on-the-go aspect likely wouldn't serve a purpose, but it's a nice idea. Also the linking of two systems for 4-player-on-the-go is impressive, if it works. Portability is the key thing here. I don't see anything wrong with it.
As far as today is concerned, just showing off the system, I thought their video was great. It was clear, precise and showed us exactly how it's to be used. I give them a solid "A" for the reveal.
I am fully expecting some drawbacks though. I'm sure it isn't as good as it appears, but so far, I like what I see.
We need to know the price, battery life, how good the screen looks outside, resolution and of course, games. Showing Skyrim was a good first step, now let's see what else they got.
So I just went and placed an order. Guess I'll have to adjust once the bundles are revealed. Man I am stoked for this, kinda happy they waited this late before launch now
In a nutshell it's a cool concept for a handheld - something to replace the 3DS, and a better alternative to a tablet in that it comes ready supplied with detachable controllers. That in itself could be enough, and make it a hit. As for the question of home console - I see nothing on the TV screen that a Wii U couldn't pull off. In fact, most of the games seemed identical to their Wii U counterparts (Skyrim, on the other hand, does not seem, from the brief glimpse, any better graphically than say Assassin's Creed on the Wii U). So I think they've given up trying to compete for the home market and taken a gamble on a different alternative. Hope it works, but my money has now gone to the PS4 and I won't be bothering to upgrade unless a home console comes along that can top it.
I like it. I just hope this doesn't mean support and games are stopping for the 3DS. 3DS is my main gaming device, and I don't have the means to play a console, usually.
@AVahne The r-word used to describe those with delayed/arrested mental development.
At the moment my biggest question is if the dock is just a chunk of plastic with a power supply and HDMI or if there's also a processing unit in it that adds to what the tablet has.
@yomanation Not able to answer questions on this site or in general? If answering questions on here is the issue, then there are ways to remedy that, like I've done with a couple of other people that I have private discussions with through other channels.
For a three minute trailer that was pretty masterful! Showing what the console does without any presentation and fanfare was just brilliant!
@Urameshi Precisely. There was plenty of evidence pointing towards an AMD deal - the job applications for AMD-branded features, the unannounced chip deal, multiple sources saying 'NX' would be more powerful than PS4 - so something doesn't add up. Could it be that the dock features an AMD processor? And that the Tegra inside the gamepad is purely for downscaling on the go? Who knows...
Can not say I'm impressed. I was hoping for an actual gaming device with a Gamecube style controller. Not another iPad knockoff with controllers on the side. It's basically a Wii U controller that hooks up to your tv. Boring.
@Yorumi
Thanks for that, yeah, 720p is probably likely then, especially since it's a small screen.
I just know that if it's bright outside, I can barely play my 3DS even on the brightest setting, and unfortunately it's going to be difficult to know that until we actually try it.
Indeed, the battery life is key here. ::fingers crossed::
Nintendo is doomed!
This is not going to adequately replace 3DS, there overall market is going to shrink.
If Nintendo Switch has no dual screen and motion controls, Breath of the Wild and Splatoon will receive disappointing, severly lacking versions. (Fortunately they are available on Wii U!)
Also, no touchscreen? That means, no more practical internet browsing, or creative apps, or drawings. I don't think it's real, I heard rumours about the new screen being multitouch. Let's see and wait...
Even though they are not shown in the trailer I doubt Nintendo will cut these features! If they do, man, what a huge step back.
@blaisedinsd I agree.
People need to understand, the one of the major points behind NS is the removal of dual screen gaming (or at least the emphasis on it, like the Wii U had so much of). In real life scenarios, the dual screen gaming aspect of the Wii U is what put off so many potential adopters. We're not talking DS here, we're talking about breaking your immersion to look completely away and down at a secondary screen. Nintendo themselves recently (outwardly) realized this and spoke on it. Not to mention the processing power lost to ensure both screen are performing at the same time.
I am all for the dropping of asymmetrical gameplay; it was a joke. I also don't need a map on a second screen.
I will say this though: if that portable screen isn't a touch screen.... yikes.
But does it play Battletoads?
Looks awesome! But I noticed no one in the video touched or swiped the screen. It'd be cool to play games like Animal Crossing or Fire Emblem without the little con things. No touch screen? Hmmmm
@earthboundlink
Probably not, because Microsoft owns Rare and their IPs and all that.
@TenEighty
The Switch pro controller or Switch grip didn't do enough to satisfy your Gamecube controller desires?
@JaxonH I think most people dislike dual screen gaming. And I think Nitneod made the right choice. But I'm me, and I'm not sure it's the right choice for me. Time will tell. Was Pikmin 4 in there today? I haven't seen it mentioned. I've already played MK and Splatoon and I can get Skyrim on PS4.
@Turbo857 Nope. There controllers now look like Playstation knockoffs. Nintendo use make good and interesting controllers until the Wii. Well, the NES wasn't much until the dog bone controller.
Looks pretty good to me. They've got a neat concept, a good design, good name and what looks like Zelda and Mario at launch. At this stage there's a chance of third-party support which is probably the best we could hope for, though a lot of those companies will drop away after releasing very little if it doesn't sell.
Plenty of questions remain - Is the hardware conducive to third-party support? It doesn't have to be hugely powerful but easy to develop for is vital. Does the dock add anything power-wise? I still suspect it does. What about the online service, Account system and Virtual console support? All were undernourished on Wii U. How much will it cost? This will have a bearing though a March launch leads me to suspect a high launch price for early adopters, dropping before Christmas next year. Does it have a touchscreen? Do (any of) the controllers have Analogue Triggers?
For me, I'm not fussed about third-party support unless we're talking exclusives. I have a PS4 and an XB1 and I suspect a lot of people posting on here have one, both or even better, a good PC. Some support is good (it's hard to push a machine as multiplayer-focussed without sport games for example)but not many people will buy one for ports even onto a portable. What Switch needs to be is the best Nintendo box possible. They've developed/funded/published about 30 games a year across 3DS and Wii U. With all their resources concentrated on one machine there's no reason not to expect the same. They should be enthusiastically remastering their back-catalogue and VC support needs to be utterly comprehensive. Nintendo alone will make or break this machine.
@Turbo857 "If the Switch can't provide dual screen gameplay"
Every game will have dual screen gameplay when they expect every gamer to buy their own NS. This is a handheld w/ TV out, everybody may need their own. Have you ever tried sharing a NNID on a 3DS? Doesn't work.
My kids tried playing Lego Dimension 1 on the TV, 1 on the GMaepad, ut it quite literally crashed every 15 minutes. They now both play split screen on the tv and so fr so god. Knock on wood.
But that's a good point, for those who like it. I still hope the Wii U Gmaepad works as a 2nd screen for the NS. They have to give us Wii U owners something, we don't have any games for the next 6 months, just a paperweight of a console.
@rjejr The screen will be off, and the dock will protect it from bumps or disconnects. Unlike the gamepad which is designed to be picked up, passed around and so on WHILE on tv mode, the Switch isn't going to pass anything to the screen when you are on tv mode. At least that is what I got from the trailer.
Anybody else feel WORSE now that we know what it looks like? This wait is going to kill me.
@TenEighty
Ultimately, it's all about how comfortable these controllers are (and they at least look rather comfortable imo). I think all of the Switch controllers designs look sleek, modern and practical. Gamecube had a great controller (for its time) but that C-stick was always a piss-pour second analog. Not to mention the B button was way too small, A button too big, and bean buttons felt weird. But to each their own...
All the rumours are true...... The video showed us nothing we didn't know already................. So why am I still blown away? Its beautiful.
After the Wii U launch i'll definitely be waiting this time around, especially to see how well it sells which effects 3rd party surpport. By the games in that trailer mostly remasters its obviously will not have BC with the Wii U, also Skyrim while an excellent game its still a last gen game. I think 3rd parties not showing any ports of the latest games are obviously testing the waters, and the power is just not there meaning Nintendo are not competing with both Sony & Microsoft in terms of power aka graphics. Which comes as no surprise as the Switch will not be sold at a loss, a competitive price point and manufacturing costs would have been key for Nintendo. I'll have to get Zelda on the Wii U for now which still looks stunning away.
@yomanation Well, private messaging via my own email doesn't run the risk of being exposed, since I'd give you the same ammo then, and that's not how I roll...
But fair enough, when I asked you that question a couple of days ago, I just wanted to have some idea of where your point of view came from, so are you an IT/tech guy or do you work in the game industry? (why else would you say you were cheating a bit?) Answer me these questions then, if you can/will.
If all answers are no, then regardless of the current outcome, I am still amazed at your certainty, especially if you should have no technical knowledge whatsoever.
I normally always disregard people that can't talk shop with me, you see...
But in all seriousness, that is just what I kept wondering about: Were the heck does he come off so sure from? Does he work for Nintendo?
kinda looks like a how the wii u should have been... hope it uses the motion controls and wii mote too, the controls look like mini wiimotes
Looks cool. Nintendo didn't show much software which probably is a good thing. It looks like a core gamers machine. I like it.
@sp_initiate-001 The Wii was a superior selling system and they wanted to cash in. They didn't try to copy the Wii U and it's doubtful this will end up better.
This, while the name is pretty strange, looks amazing. I can barely put into words my excitement. It's everything I had hoped it would be. It's the ultimate form of the Wii U. I'm just...wow Ninty....just wow.
I like the hardware. But I need to know more about the games, the specs, and the price before I make up my mind.
@xj220_afiles Oh, well hopefully they are, but likely not.
Dang it, thought I could be helpful for once xD
Good name and interesting design, they hit a home run with this one. They actually learned from some mistakes! They actually listened to some fan requests!
But the battery life? If it's anything like the Wii u gamepad that's bad
@Yorumi yeah. It would be interesting to know if this CUSTOM chip is intact the tegra 2
I think my only thing is with nintendo's revision history on handhelds I almost want to wait this out... they may release one with double the battery or something.... but I'll wait until I get specs.
I wondered what the kids would think, so I showed the trailer to my two. Not sure if they are typical of teenagers in general but anyway they were not very overly impressed. I had to cave in recently and buy them a PS4 and the only thing they were interested in was how good the games looked. No surprise that they didn't get excited over the games. The portability thing they admitted would be an asset, but not a deal breaker. What they want to see in a new console is graphics that will top the PS4 or PCs, otherwise they are happy where they are now. Just reporting, so don't shoot the messenger.
@DarkKirby
It won't fall apart. Your hand and grip is wider than the controller so you won't likely be gripping it alone and there is what looks like a little unlock button you have to press to release it along the vertical edge (you can see it in the pics).
The controllers when separated are small (Not quite as big as an original NES controller by some online speculation/calculations) but they have good functionality. Looks like left and right shoulders four buttons and an analog.
@ThanosReXXX Ah my mistake there, I meant could you send me a link to that forum you mentioned. Apologies, but thank you for the tip
@Ed_Fairway The Nvidia forum?
That's over here:
https://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/2016/10/20/nintendo-switch/
Every time you take off those controllers and put them back on and every time you dock you are creating a potential for something to break. Especially if you have little kids. That docking unit is gonna fall to the floor a lot.
The xyab buttons blocked by that stick look awkward. The detatched controllers look too tiny.
I hope as a lefty I could even use the joysticks in both forms.
I wish they'dve just made a way for my 3ds games to appear on the TV and made a standalone console.
@ThanosReXXX Thank you very much
@Ed_Fairway You're welcome.
@BiasedSonyFan
Hopefully so they can put out plenty of games. Like I said just after the bit you quoted
@rjejr
I'll miss the dual screen as well, especially with things like Super Mario Maker. I'm wondering about any backwards compatibility but it seems that the Wii U games are going to get a second and boosted chance on the Switch instead of backwards compatibility.
I'm with you on touch screen. I think there is one and I give it 50/50 on running mobile apps especially from Nintendo but curated, not the whole Play store — android support would mean getting the latest media apps all the time without effort. I also think the side controllers will have a gyro/accelerometer.
Both of those features don't belong in this reveal because this reveal is about reeling in the core gamers that haven't been paying close attention to Nintendo for a long time. The system is black and lacking whimsy. The controls are "standard", the games that are shown prominently are in the style of open world and sports (and Mario) and I'm thinking the divisive features of past Nintendo consoles (motion controls and touchscreen) are intentionally hidden.
As long as there is gyro in the controllers, Splatoon will be fine. All it takes is a quick flip up map and a gyro-point to the location you want to warp to and it will get you most of the way there.
Hate to say it, but I'm a bit underwhelmed by the presentation.
-The Controllers: I imagine those might be easy to lose, especially for parents with small children.
-Screen: I'm not feeling the idea of people crowding around a screen for mobile multiplayer (remember the PSOne LCD Screen).
-Ports: Four of the games are ports (Mario Kart, Splatoon, -Skyrim, and Zelda...maybe Basketball too). Most of the people excited over them are people who have already played them either on Wii U or another system (Zelda being the exception as it's not out).
-Skyrim: The idea that Bethesda is making games for the system is awesome (I've got platinum trophies for a few Bethesda games on my PSN). However, Skyrim is a text heavy game. How will that come across on the Switch's screen (remember Borderlands 2 in the Vita)? Yeah, you could play it on the TV, but you could also do that on a PS3/4.
Don't get me wrong, I am interested in Switch. I've just got a lot of questions that need to be answered first. I think it'll be an instance where I try it before buying it (like the 3DS).
@ThanosReXXX Just done some research; would it be safe to assume the console is in good hands, by all means correct me if I'm wrong
@rjejr
Multiplayer local on one TV will be doable in a couple ways and I'm betting mix and match with multiple NS devices and a TV based one is going to be made as easy as possible. That's pretty cool and since all games can count on local multiplayer anywhere, it's a fair bet there will be many games supporting this. All without the downside of slowing down the system.
What I want to see and probably won't get is some clever integration of second screen gameplay anyway. I'd like the option of using a second NS or a smartphone or tablet to use as a map or intricate control scheme like affordable space adventures. Without support out-of-the-box, though, this seems unlikely or at least relegated to the smartphone support apps that some of the big games use as a second screen.
Amiibo, motion-control, mobile compatibility, touch screen, performance, specific launch games. This is stuff Nintendo is going to want to dole out to us slowly over the next few months to build excitement... and I'm betting a good deal of it will wait until January — but not a big bet because yesterday I was ready to wait for any news until then!
So much real official foundation to build on now, though. I'm really beginning to like Switch myself, but if the performance is low I'll be disappointed.
Wasn't sure how I would feel about a new system that was a console/handheld hybrid. I'm pretty dang impressed with how well this seems to blend the two.
@Ed_Fairway Well, Nvidia is a prime supplier of graphical hardware, if that is what you mean to ask, AND I'm betting they also had a hand in securing some of the previously never seen on Nintendo third parties, since they have these connections.
But we need more info and Nintendo just tweeted that they will release more info before the release in March next year. Here's hoping that this doesn't mean that they are going to keep us waiting again without saying anything until the reveal.
Now that we know what it is, we need to get some info every other week or at least once a month, to keep the hype going...
@chiefeagle02
"The Controllers: I imagine those might be easy to lose"
I don't think it's that easy. You have to hold a button in to detach them first and there is a nice place to return them to when you are done.
"Screen: I'm not feeling the idea of people crowding around a screen for mobile multiplayer..."
People do this with smartphones all the time. No one is going to sit there for hours at a time but it will be a fun diversion in many situations.
"-Ports: Four of the games are ports (Mario Kart, Splatoon, -Skyrim, and Zelda...maybe Basketball too)."
They aren't direct ports. As many have pointed out they have new content and/or features. Mario is completely new.
"-Skyrim: ... text"
I'd like to see the solution there as well. The bigger overall point is that there are adjustments that need to be made by developers when it is being played with the smaller screen size.
"Don't get me wrong, I am interested in Switch. I've just got a lot of questions that need to be answered first."
Sure. I think everyone does. I'm 99% sure I'm going to be buying this but one or two things could sour me on it.
@ThanosReXXX
Hopefully Nvidia might have a hand in marketing as well, for if they can fix Nintendo's third party issues, then they could be great ally for Nintendo.
@Yorumi Exactly. Or at a party for just playing a fun two player game in a hot seat tournament style where no one is playing for a long time. Just "hey, check this out" and you play for a few minutes and someone else tries, then a couple of people get pretty serious about it, and a few crowd around.
This system is amazing! It's like a dream Nintendo console to me, I love it!
Ok Nintendo....IM SOLD!!!! Good marketing! That's what we like to see! I'm so excited for that little bit extra Zelda!
Well it's a bit late for skyrim :S
@Captain_Gonru Hey now, don't go jinxing BotW and have them taking everything off the Gamepad. Weve lost the real time map but I'm still holding out for placing the icons in the distance. And item selection. They said 2 tears ago this was a Wii U exclusive, they better not castrate it too much. I'm fine with 720p30, game doesn't look like much anyway.
So, who won the day/week, Switch or RDR2?
At least it's a better name than Nintendo WiiRwithU.
@Yorumi True. Serkan Toto has said $399 for the entire bundle with the pro controller and presumably a game, so...
But I'm sticking with $299 - $349 at most. Guess we'll find out soon enough...
@Captain_Gonru "Yeah, that's not fitting in a pocket"
Inside coat breast pocket or trench coat pocket might fit...
With the detachable controllers slid off, it isn't all that big, so just keep these in another pocket.
@Ed_Fairway I think they have already helped in that regard, looking at the list of third party developers and seeing the ones that have never even touched a Nintendo console before. Just Google "third parties working with Nvidia" and see how many of them you can cross reference with this Nintendo third party list...
@Captain_Gonru Today was much more than I expected as well, I was really expecting Bill and Reggie eating donuts. I was impressed. It will be all over the mainstream media tomorrow, they won't cover RDR2.
@ThanosReXXX "But I'm sticking with $299 - $349 at most."
Wait, what, I thought I was the $299 guy and you were the $399 guy? Or did we finally decide to meet in the middle on that one? I can always remember how our conversations start but I can never remember how they end. Maybe b/c they never seem too.
I have to admit. I wasn't expecting Nintendo to break past the hype with their reveal. But, I'm gladly surprised at what was shown and how it was communicated.
Switch looks slick and capable. The message simple yet effective.
Have to say. Impressive stuff...
That and I'm quietly almost exclusively an Nvidia subscriber for my GPU's. Very happy about that collaboration.
@rjejr That was when I was still convinced that it was a full fledged console close to PS4 Pro in power, there was NO WAY that was going to be cheaper than a Wii U, but this little gizmo will sit nicely at around the aforementioned price level. The $349 pack might even have a game with it.
Or maybe an extra pro controller, provided that the standard package has one already.
Just out of curiosity, I watched the recorded podcast from PE with SMD as guest and boy did they look utterly stunned and especially Dave. I still think he's a smart and logical guy, but boy is he a sore loser.
I'm a guy that has always learned to own up to stuff and be a real man and swallow your pride whenever you need to, but he is still stunned. I really have to laugh at that, man. He just needs to man up instead of tweeting "well, I don't know if I'm going to buy this"...
It's a friggin' hobby, but he looks like he was just told to hand over one of his kidneys...
I took a screen cap from the moment when the trailer ended and I pasted his reaction into it. Priceless...
@Captain_Gonru Well, when I saw it sat on a table or connected to the head rest of that van, it looked small enough to me. Kind of like the size of the entire lower portion of the 3DS XL, except it's all screen. Put that in your breast pocket, much like a phone or your flip wallet and put the controllers in a side pocket or whatever.
@rjejr @Captain_Gonru That kickstand does look a little feeble, though. Hope it's not some kind of plastic hinge, but a bit more sturdy...
@rjejr "I can always remember how our conversations start but I can never remember how they end. Maybe b/c they never seem too."
Yup, that last part indeed... Call me Atreyu...
@Captain_Gonru Well, at least you'll get your toaster...
Wonder what you'll see on screen if you put an actual sandwich in between there...
@ThanosReXXX Every pack should have a game with it, nobody buys consoles without games any more. We still probably haven't seen the game yet though, something Nintendo Land or Wii Sports. Or Nintendo got a clue and Zelda.
I still think your right though. Not about the dock and Nvidia, but platform. This can't be all of it. 3DS, 3DS XL, 2DS, New 3DS. Those are kind of the same, but 2DS is different. I'm still expecting a smaller tablet for kids and @Captain_Gonru pockets. And a cheaper home. Not in 2017, but 2018. We live in an ever changing world.
Looks kinda neat, but I hope it doesn't try to replace the smaller dedicated portable 3DS line. I don't want to lug a tablet-sized gaming device everywhere.
@ThanosReXXX Nobody is ever going to use that kickstand, 3rd parties will make holders that are sturdier. How that will work with the toaster I don't know, I already picture my kids scratching up the screen taking it in and out.
I did look for a vertical kickstand, no such luck. And why not make the controllers also connect to the top and bottom for faux dual screen?
But all in all, more good than bad.
@rjejr Nintendo at E3 2018: "We present to you: The Nintendo Switch Mini"...
And there'll probably be some safe guards inside that dock to prevent any of such mishaps. And it'll have sturdy feet too, so it's not going to topple over either. They've researched the damn thing for almost 4 years if not more. Iwata has probably ordered them to make it sturdy enough to let it survive a fall from 9 to 10 feet, like he did with the DS and 3DS...
Well, it's off to bed for me, almost 2am over here, so see you tomorrow...
The editors forgot to say in the headline: "It's now live."
Porkins, logging off, now live.
I'm quite impressed. As it seems that the hybrid rumours were true then I expect that the power being about equal to the XBO is probably true too. Having that kind of power on the go could make the PS4/XBO crowd actually consider it worthwhile.
A power level around the XBO will be fine for 3rd parties, so there'll be no reason for it not to get their games. Given the option for a regular XBO/PS4 version of a game or a Shift version it would seem that the Shift would be the better choice because of the portability; although it would still have to overcome the community aspect with any online multiplayer games.
There's obviously a lot of details still to be revealed (especially concerning the battery life and storage) but I'm glad that the console is different from the PS4/XBO.
Off topic, when people mention 'RDR2' my brain tries to read it as 'R2D2'. I think a R2D2 game could be pretty cool though.
That's how it's done Nintendo, that's how you make a come back!
@BiasedSonyFan Fair point
@ThanosReXXX (whistles in amazement) that is quite a list, especially with Bethesda on the list. If Nvidia gives a hand in advertising the Switch, then it's possible Nintendo will be making a comeback.
@Ed_Fairway Well, I don't know if they are actively helping in advertising, although they also have their own Switch splash page (https://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/2016/10/20/nintendo-switch) but that links to Nintendo's own page for more info.
But as I already mentioned before, I do think that it's quite likely that Nintendo can benefit from Nvidia's contacts in the PC gaming scene, and looking at that current third party supporters list, I actually think they've done exactly that.
And having a VP Sales who was a former EA Exec will probably also come in handy to acquire the necessary contacts...
@ThanosReXXX As you seem well versed in these sort of matters, I shall take your word on it
@ThanosReXXX "We present to you: The Nintendo Switch Mini"
Yup, that's the one. Nintneod and Apple may not be in bed together yet, but they're at first base and Apple is trying to steal second.
I have no reason to think this, but I can't help but feel that in the art of business war Apple has the upper hand, that SMR reveal and timed exclusivity always looked bad to me. And having over $200B in the bank, $180B you are trying to spend overseas before the US taxes it, can't hurt. I don't think Apple will buy them though, why buy the cow when the milk's so cheap? 30% of all sales for little effort.
http://money.cnn.com/2015/07/22/investing/apple-stock-cash-earnings/
@rjejr "Every pack should have a game with it, nobody buys consoles without games any more."
Yeah, it'll probably have some pack-in mini game or demo collection, but I meant an actual physical game in a retail package. Just like there were these bundles for the Wii and Wii U, so for clarity's sake, I'll rephrase it:
"The $349 pack might even have an additional game with it."
But for some reason, I think you understood that already. Wii Sports and the like really don't count as "comes bundled with a game" as far as I am concerned, as that is more a bunch of glorified tech demos stuck together to make some games, much like Nintendo Land on the Wii U. That at least came in it's own box. Don't know about the States, but over here, Wii Sports came in either a cardboard or soft plastic CD sleeve, and was tucked in the bag with the instruction manual and so on.
@Ed_Fairway I am a sales & marketing professional in the IT industry (26 years of exp in total), so I can also use that knowledge to a certain extent in the gaming industry, especially for hardware components, but even though I can talk up to a certain level, I definitely don't know everything, so especially where gaming is concerned, it's more part knowledge, part educated guesses.
And I thought the next system was going to be a home console, a REAL one, that is. So I've already been wrong concerning this system...
It doesn't affect me, but has anyone else noticed that this is a rare video game control scheme (and probably the very first on a traditional controller) that is equally suited to left-handed gamers as it is to righties? Southpaws rejoice! Maybe Nintendo can even get Ned Flanders to stock the Switch at his Leftorium.
@rjejr Never in a million years is Nintendo going to sell out to Apple. They want to be LIKE Apple, as in ecosystem-wise, not taken over by Apple. And management and shareholders will NEVER let Nintendo fall into Western hands either. They'd sooner disband the entire company and commit ritual suicide...
(and just in case that this crosses your mind: NO, the amusement park and movie initiatives do not count as an example that Nintendo does sell itself out)
And besides: they have more than enough money to stall any hostile takeover indefinitely. And then there's the thing about Apple having no shares in the first place, so they have no entry point either.
Mario Run means next to nothing in that entire equation. I like to keep things realistic, so I'll throw the whole "Apple might buy Nintendo" straight out of the window...
@ThanosReXXX
Do you even read my comments before replying?
"I don't think Apple will buy them though,"
Apple doesn't have to buy Nitneod to be in bed w/ them. Has anybody bought Sega yet? Nintendo doesn't even own Gamefreak (I checked, GF is an independent company) but they make a lot of Pokemon games. I bet a lot of people would say Gamefreak is in bed w/ Nintendo.
Apple > Nintendo > Gamefreak
You don't have to marry someone to make them your ... female dog. If AC and FE mobile games both come out next year as timed Apple exclusives, then Ninteod is in bed w/ Apple in my mind and many others. I don't think Apple will be that stupid and pay for those 2 franchisees, but we'll see. SMR will make them closer, not father apart, and if NS sells poorly due to price or lack of marketing, then Nintendo will need to make money somehow, and Apple has plenty to pay them.
@ThanosReXXX Wii Sports
Don't discount that game. 100 million people bought Wii Sports. Not a Nintnedo Wii, not a Nintnedo home console, Wii Sports. That's why I think the Nitneod brand has faltered these past few years, nobody buying Wii knew it was Nintneod, they were just buying Wii sports to play w/ their friends. Then Wii Fit.
And Nintendo knew this, and made Ntinedo Land, which nobody could figure it out or wanted and Wii U perished as a result.
I'd say it's all about the pack in. Wii Sports sold - the Wii, not Nintendo - which is why nobody knew what Nintendo Land was b/c 90 million Wii owners didn't know it was a Nintneod console. So Nintendo Land was a failure. Had they called it "Wii Land" - the hub area is full of Mii's, it even has an online game "Find the Miis" which I'm guessing you didn't know about - Wii U might have sold better. "Wii Land", where your Mii gets to mingle with Nintneod characters. It works for those Disney World games on 3DS well enough.
So don't short thrift the pack in, it can make a world of difference. I'm guessing MK8:Swtich Ed. Or maybe even Zelda BotW if they're smart. And maybe a crap 2 player minigame collection for those way too small joy-cons. But I honestly hope they save that for a free Christmas time download.
@rjejr I read everything and that was my interpretation, or rant, if you will. But Nintendo isn't going to be anyone's b.... either, so that too can go straight out of the window labeled as "not worth considering".
And from what I always understood, the only reason that Wii Sports was so high up in the charts, was because of it being a pack in game, not because it was such a popular title. Everyone wanted a Wii, not that specific game.
If you look at non-pack in alternatives or sequels like Sports Resort, then the number of sales is much, much lower.
By the way: how are you liking them color schemes on the Joy-Con grips?
@rjejr but I am indeed also expecting some kind of pack in, maybe it's even built into the hardware: some interactive demos to try out or something, but there are still so many questions left, also about the screen and the controllers, and Nintendo is apparently not going to talk for the next couple of months, so here goes the rumor mill again, I suppose...
@ThanosReXXX "By the way: how are you liking them color schemes on the Joy-Con grips?"
I like the Famicom color scheme, makes it look even more like Jar Jar Binks than it already does. We'll be calling that the Jar Jar controller if we ever get one.
"the only reason that Wii Sports was so high up in the charts, was because of it being a pack in game, not because it was such a popular title. Everyone wanted a Wii, not that specific game."
You have it backwards - nobody in the US wanted a Wii, everybody wanted "Wii Sports". Aunts' uncles, cousins, old age homes, nurseries, libraries. None of those purchased a Wii and then thought - ok, what game can we buy for this? They all bought Wii Sports for Wii Sports, the Wii IS Wii Sports for a lot of those buyers. Half of them bought Wii Fit and Mario Kart later on, but they only had the Wii to play those games b/c they bought Wii Sports and a Wii was in the Wii Sports box.
@rjejr Well, obviously I'm not looking at it from an American perspective, even though I am one. Here in Europe everyone wanted the "waggle console". And of course to play "real" bowling and tennis, but they didn't buy it just for Wii Sports.
Maybe it's that picture with four beams on one side and three on the other that you posted a while back...
It is true that a lot of people didn't buy any other games anymore later on, because the motion fad died out, or they simply discovered they weren't real gamers at all.
Anyways, enough with the Wii, we're going off topic again...
So, back to the Switch: after I asked you about the color schemes, I saw that someone posted a link in the comments section with far more professional looking color schemes:
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2016/10/gallery_take_a_look_at_these_classic_nintendo_switch_joy-con_grip_designs#comment3684053
To be honest I'm not feeling very excited at the moment.
It just didn't blow me away and personally I wouldn't want to carry anything that expensive and big around with me. Hope they sell extra clicky controllers as I can see lots of them going missing!
@riChchestM
Oohhh okay. We'll see how good this thing will be. I hope it won't be too expensive, though.
$300 would be reasonable for me, what about you guys?
I am not pleased. This basically confims that everone should have just bought an Xbox or PS. This is such a disgrace, that I might sell my Wii U. Doing this to Nintendo fans is literally a crime.
What a waste of freaking money.
I've been a Nintendo fan longer than probably half of the people working there, and they ruined Smash Bros. I can't even explain how stupid Nintendo looks, right now.
