Rumour: Nintendo May Be Looking To Add SNES Mouse Support To Switch Online

I'll shill for Hyperkin's laser mouse for SNES.
That's a really nice device, much better than the original trackball mouse from the 90s. It makes Mario Paint feel much better.
Too bad the chances of an official USB-to-SNES adapter is zero percent.

It also works great in Civilization and Wolfenstein 3D, really making me wish it worked on SNES Doom and Sim City

I can already hear "Creative Exercise" in my head.

This is what I love NSO for. Adding the stuff we'd never thought we'd see again. Battletoads Double Dragon today was a great example of it. Mario Paint would be a massive heavy-hitter in this catergory.

Don't forget Super Scope and NES Light Gun too.

A better way for selling more accessories, but I'm ok XD

Won't be possible unfortunately. The guns can't be used on modern TV's. Super scope was horrible but the NES zapper was awesome, if you can deal with a taunting dog.

Mario Paint was fun, I have fond memories of playing it and never played Mario and Wario so that would be interesting

It would be cool if they had keyboard and mouse support for the new system. It would certainly make me more interested in playing FPS and certain strategy games on Switch.

I hope it’s also touch compatible and that the Japanese lost media Mario & Wario gets added

@DennyCrane I doubt that Nintendo is actually making the Switch compatible with the original snes mouse, probably just they're own branded one or even any mouse. The Wii U had Duck Hunt and the Wiimotes worked with the IR sensor, surely they could figure it out with the joycon.

This would be a good start toward preserving legacy media, but let's not stop here. I still want the N64 DD, Satellaview, and Virtual Boy games on the service as well.

@FernandoMachado How is Mario & Wario ‘lost media’? Am I missing something? I’ve seen it for sale here in Japan on multiple occasions. Even Googling it displays multiple listings of it for sale.

I had it for the WiiU actually. Wasn't bad, but had to use a cross target to be accurate, you could do it without but that was a pain in the butt. I'm not sure how you could do it with joy-con, it's a shame the sensor can't be plugged into the switch, could then use the Wiimote option again. I think, unless light-gun tech can be reintroduced some way then those type of games are going to remain on older systems to not have any sacrifices to gameplay. And boy were there some great games, playstation had some awesome ones, Die Hard 2 on the Die Hard Trilogy will always be very fondly remembered

Yeah I always thought Nintendo should have done more with the SNES mouse and carried it forward. The Wii had so much potential too in regards to using the wiimote as a mouse. A missed chance to get some popular PC games on there that would have had an advantage over the other consoles (SimCity, Diablo, StarCraft, Doom, etc.). I seem to remember the Wii U version of Minecraft not having the gamepad to be used for item management and building, etc. Some rumors were it would have made it a potentially better version to the other console versions, so Mojang/Microsoft didn't implement it. Oh well.

I somewhat doubt they'd let you pair a mouse via Bluetooth, or via USB, but hey, they could. It'd be fun even if you used the gyro in the system/controller, though.

@StephenYap3 the refresh rate on modern tvs is too fast for light guns to work.

This would be really nice but I also still remember the datamining that showed comparability with the N64 transfer pack and we still haven’t seen that so we could unfortunately be waiting a really long time for this if it does happen.

@DennyCrane the sensor bar doesn't need to be connected to anything, it just needs a power source. We just need the switch to support a wiimote type of controller, preferably a new one with new tech and a rechargeable battery.

Oooo good point and as for a new one absolutely I would imagine that would be the way they would go if going down that route. The mouse is easy enough with usb ports and you could very easy do a similar thing to do with sensor bar etc to play light-gun games from the 8 and 16bit days, but I imagine that would likely be a route for the next system, especially the wealth of gaming options available, adding Wii games to download could be a large earner for Nintendo

Would it work well? Absolutely not but it might be playable and wouldn't hurt to be an option.

They could make these things work with the touch screen and with the Joy-Con motion and pointing capabilities, but have they ever altered control schemes with NSO games??
Does anyone know if Mario Paint could be controlled without the mouse peripheral?

@DennyCrane NES Zapper was only good for the first-party launch games it was designed for.
Trying to play a faster-paced game like Operation Wolf with a Zapper will make you feel like you're going to break your fingers in half!
I've wonder if the cowboy-Western-style Famicom gun would've been more comfortable to use but not only have those become an incredibly expensive collectable but trying to import one (or any light gun from Japan) will be at the mercy of whether your customs official is a good cop or bad cop.

It'd be awesome if you could plug in a generic USB mouse and it'd work just like the SNES mouse

I would think that if they were looking to port Mario Paint, they would port the Mario Artist series. That never saw a Western release and I think people would be really happy to get their hands on it.

Not to mention they could make a new icon for "64DD" games and confuse people!

Would be awesome to play Mario Paint with any USB or Bluetooth mouse... Also, Mario & Wario could be played with Giro Controls like the Switch versions of Captain Toad and Super Mario Galaxy.

@DennyCrane they could do a Zapper that has the same technology of the pointer of the Wii, or the Switch's right Joy-Con.

I had Operation Wolf, got it for christmas '89 if i remember right might have been the year before, I was 7 or 8 at time and had only played Duck Hunt with my Zapper till then other than brief go's on Hogans Alley at cousin. OW was a fun game, can't remember finding it too bad with Zapper but back then had a different mentality playing games. My poor brother had it for his Master System but didnt have a light-gun for like a month or so, used to just stare at the case in longing.

@HeadPirate 64DD games would be awesome! A nice addition for us Western users, who never got the chance to play those games back in the day.

Can't see them doing the Wiimote thing on Switch, maybe the next console and as for Joycon what IceClimberMain said "Would it work well? Absolutely not but it might be playable and wouldn't hurt to be an option." which to be honest kinda makes it not worth it for Nintendo. But, I absolutely think Nintendo should consider adding a Wiimote style controller for such games, plus the possibility of new games in that style and of course downloadable wii games, for which there is no shortage.

Why not? The Switch DOES use the Mouse for Game Builder Garage. And Mario Paint was the thang ding that The Brothers Chaps used to make Homestar Runner in the first place. Sewiously!

I did enjoy playing it on WiiU, wasnt as good as original obviously due to target being needed instead of just the eye but a good work around none the less and whilst not as satisfying it was still a lot of fun.

@DennyCrane Look at how the pointer system worked on Mario Galaxy, they can certainly add Duck Hunt and the rest of Zapper games like that, it'll be really cool hehehe.

I do get that, but Galaxy can be loose with pointer so it works okay just to waggle around and grab, were as light-gun shooters demand quick accuracy and the joycons would struggle not to mention recalibrate mid flow. It could work and would be ok as a substitute, but would certainly feel lesser for it and belittle the games a bit. I do hope that in the future we get a great way to play these and new games like these, there is such an unbridled joy to light-gun games.
All this talk of light-gun games is really making me wanna play some!!

As some Games (Doom, Quake) have mouse and keyboard support, Nintendo can just go for it

Y'know in hindsight, Mario Maker 2 would've really benefitted from "Switch Mouse" of sorts given how its UI is taken from Mario Paint. Would've been a decent substitute for the lack of a good touch screen.

@Not_Soos Speaking of the N64 DD, I would definitely love to play that F-Zero X expansion kit in which features customizable tracks and vehicles.

@DennyCrane that might be the only way, besides, pointing with the Joy-Con is a lot more accurate than doing it with the Wiimote. Still, light gun games were really fun!

I saw where somebody modified the timing of the ROM for duck hunt and wrote it back to a cartridge so it worked in an original Nintendo on a modern tv. It’s probably very doable! I think the timing of the flash on the screen just needs to be modified by a fraction of a second to account for the lag.

As far as mouse support, I would hope that they would allow us to use any USB mouse, and not necessarily the original SNES mouse with an adapter. Any mouse should be able to do the exact same thing.

I'm probably alone on this one, but King Arthur's World on Nintendo Online would make me very happy.

@WhensDinner @Eman528 The Switch already supports USB Keyboard and Mouse. Game Builder Garage lets you use both.

@StephenYap3 If the new Joycons could work like that and we saw a revival of Railshooters like on the Wii I'd be beyond happy.
