This week marks the return of Mickey Mouse in Epic Mickey: Rebrushed - a 3D platformer that originally made its debut on the Nintendo Wii.

The new 'Rebrushed' version of the game has now arrived and the reviews are in. Here on Nintendo Life, we've given the game eight out of ten stars and called it a welcome return for one of Mickey's most memorable adventures.

"We’d recommend this to anyone looking for a big-budget 3D platformer that does things a little differently from the genre norms, and of course to anyone who considers themselves an avid Disney fan."

So, what did other critics have to say about this release?

Pure Xbox - 8/10

"We're really impressed by just how much effort has gone into this remake (especially the new visuals), and although it's arguably a bit too pricey at launch, there's definitely fun to be had with this one if you're a Disney fan or just a fan of platforming games in general."

"This is and always has been a game that will appeal to a very specific combo of 3D platforming and Disney fans, but for that audience it remains a flawed but charming trip into the forgotten past."

Sounds like the same, "Eh, sure, it's okay," that the original was. Personally while I was hyped for it back when I never actually developed much of a taste for it so I'll likely pass unless I see it very cheap at some point.

@Lizuka I’m feeling similar. I remember the gameplay not being as fun as I’d hoped when renting it. I just grabbed a bunch of games for the backlog stack, and then Zelda will be on the pile. so I’m waiting and it would take a pretty good discount to buy, I think.

I hated playing the original Wii Epic Mickey because of its flaws, especially the camera. So when I played the Rebrushed demo (not on Switch), I was struck with the massive paintball feeling of, “It’s… playable. … It’s playable!!”

Then I remembered the price tag, chuckled, said, “No, thanks. Maybe some other day?” and carried on whistling like Steamboat Willie. But, hey! At least my feelings improved since 2010!

For the most part, I love 3D platformers. So I'll be picking this one up for sure. It's so much fun to explore the worlds.

As I kid I loved the 90s Disney games like Quackshot, Castle of Illusion or World of Illusion... so I was a bit hyped when this was announced for the Wii. But the "chore" style of gameplay (that was popular at the time - "paint everything around you" or "collect billions of pieces") turned me off.

Doubted this remake would convince anyone not already interested in this kind of game to get it and these reviews and comments seem to confirm it, but I'm so glad this exists for those interested in revisiting or playing Epic Mickey for the first time, me included, in its best form ever (except for performance on Switch, as much as it isn't a dealbreaker for me like usual I have my fingers crossed that it can be improved by patches and/or the successor) - as always the starting price really doesn't matter considering most games get discounted all the time and even at launch in several regions!

Was hyped for this initially but the demo performance on the switch moved it to the 'buy on discount' section..

@NintendoWife You know, I think a mad developer should seriously do that. Make a collectathon platformer where you must collect exactly one billion "x" to unlock the true ending.

I think the demo played fine on both Switch and my Steam Deck/PC (yeah I tried the demo on all three). I enjoyed it back on the Wii despite its bugs but I’m a huge fan of classic Mickey (modern Mickey not so much). I’ll probably queue this up to download on my Steam Deck in a bit. Who knows, I may even grab the physical copy for my Switch at some point but I’m always kinda hesitant to buy new games for a system that’s about to be replaced since those games usually have a decent chance at getting ported to the new system.
