Random: Minecraft Fans Apologise To 'Story Mode' In Response To Live-Action Movie Reveal

I always like Story Mode.😅 I don't think I realized that there was so much hate towards it.

Wow. Gotta say, very topical using a Beatles song in a trailer for what looks like a bad video game movie.

I have memories of playing it and I didn’t think it was awful, but the way I played it was Netflix, since they had a version of it playable on there for free for a few years before taking it off. I remember watching videos of YouTubers playing it too. Seeing Reuben die actually made me super upset while playing.

Gonna be another Borderlands scenario. Should have made it animated like Mario or at least a hybrid like Sonic if they wanted any chance of success. I can already tell the people that get overpaid as hell for these decisions went

I never played the whole game through but I liked Story Mode. It was trying to build a story out of something that... had no story.

That said, the wolf in the trailer thumbnail looks like it has mini camel humps and that's DISGUSTING.

Not sure what the hate is about, it's a minute-long teaser that shows off the aesthetic. That's about it. I thought it looked fine, though I've never been a huge Minecraft fan anyway.

It's almost like if you choose to express simple dislike as pure hatred you end up looking like a burke.

I really don't know what's worse for me, the visuals on this movie or Ugly Sonic

Sometimes you don't immediately appreciate something for being different until you find out how it could have been much worse... Like how I started appreciating Mario Party 8 after playing Mario Party 9!

I guess we’ll see with an actual trailer but the live action characters in a full CG world just look bad. Crappy green screen bad.

My kids and I play Minecraft together often. My daughter said the movie looks stupid. My son said it looked awful but he liked Jack Black 🤷‍♂️🤣

@Mrkittyhead: Same here. I wasn't even aware Minecraft: Story Mode was hated at all before this article. I never finished the game myself (I was near the end of the first season if I recall correctly) but while the game didn't exactly become a favorite of mine I did enjoy it for what it was.

Doesn’t look that bad… looks kind of like a fun family film.

I just wanted it to be animated especially after seeing the teaser, hopefully the Netflix series is better than the both of these (not that I really hate story mode tbh)

Gamers really wanting to keep that reputation of manchildren with all the gnashing of teeth and throwing of fits every time a video game movie is made. Even if it's the worst thing to ever bear the name of video games, who cares. The game is still good. They're getting as bad as Star Wars fans not just being happy the originals still exist and shrugging shoulders at the five hundred series Disney has cranked out.

Thank god. I was worried I was just crotchety, old, cynical, and hated everything and that everyone else loved the trailer.

Funny... my wife, not a Minecraft fan, was like "Ooh I wanna watch that!" and I won't mind tagging along with her and the kids. Mindless fun.

It's a joke movie. And since MS are treating Minecraft like a joke, it fits perfectly fine.

Also, Story Mode was funny too. It was really odd how all of a sudden it stopped working for me on Netflix.

Minecraft has one of the most distinctive visual styles in all of gaming. It’s absurd to toss that all out the window for the movie.

I don't know, I appreciate Minecraft for what it is, but could never really get into it, maybe if i was a kid when it came out, its pretty much digital legos my kids play it and i have some friends that do .. the graphics suck so bad even with ray tracing and mods... With that being said that trailer made the world look better than it ever has and it looks like they're trying with it... My kids will enjoy it, I like jack black... telltale games suck this movie might be okay or not but if it entertains my children.... (realizing there's alot of adults complaining here) and its not dumber than any of the crap they already make (minus instant no woke garbage) ill take my kids to see this who this is primarily for so calm down people...however jason momoa looks stupid ...like a live action dora

This is borderlands level of bad serious the hype is gone it's like they weren't even trying with this I wish they animated it like mario movie or like Sonic with animation hybrid.

Say what you will about the Mario movie and its simplistic storyline, at least it respected the source material.

Although having Nintendo hovering overhead throughout development likely helped.

Would say it is a very creative and humorous way to show a dislike, by praising another title.

And it is totally normal to show if you like or dislike a product.
Yes there are people that are crossing lines they should not, but it has become the norm to ignore every legitimate criticism on a product because of that.
In this case here, they dislike the style they did choose for the movie.

@FX102A To be fair, Mario's source material is all over the place. I could argue they actually didn't respect the source material by trying to tie everything together.

Mario is great, but its universe is incredibly inconsistent.

I would agree if it wasn't for the fact that Story Mode wasn't so inaccessible to play these days

@Mz3player It shows the aesthetic, which is hideous.

It shows the tone and humor, which is grating and cookie cutter respectively.

And it shows the intended audience, which is not the entire family like a good Pixar film, it's just for kids.

Which also shows the true intent (not that it's a surprise), not to make a fun and creative film that can engage all ages, but to make money by cashing in on a popular IP for kids.

I would guess the best stories about Minecraft are the ones the kids who play it make up in their own heads.

The filmmakers appear to have treated this as a blank canvas to build upon, and in fairness isn't that true to the spirit of the game?

I've always joked about people using Beatles songs in media and radio stations(E.G a radio station at Captain D's was playing Day Tripper and I said "Gee, this radio station must be rich, they're playing The Beatles!"), but this? This is nothing to joke about. It will be bad, but it will be a smash hit, just because it's related to Minecraft. :/

The kids look like the belong in the movie. The three adults look out of place.

I think it's just people facing the reality most videogame adaptions just aren't good. The recent spell of good ones have been exceptions

Minecraft is bound to be low quality because its owned by a company who bought it only because it made money. Its not like Mario where Miyamoto was involved.

My 10yr old who plays Minecraft thought the trailer seemed pretty good. So there ya go - straight from the target audience more or less.

This trailer had me gag-cringing all the way through so that makes sense.

Just let Element Animation do it, then we'd get a pretty good comedy.

Jack Black doesn't look anything like Steve. My kids have a Steve action figure, and I assume he's supposed to look like the actor who plays Andy in Modern Family. I didn't showcase the trailer to my kids yet, because I'm afraid they're going to make me go to see this movie hahahaha. I remember my son "watching" Minecraft: Story Mode on Netflix years ago. I guess he did like it.

@MsJubilee @Bunkerneath Well technically, Minecraft is available on Nintendo Switch. Which makes the Minecraft IP relevant to Nintendo Life, since Minecraft as a franchise is relevant to current Nintendo gamers. Just in their defense 😛

@Bunkerneath to actually answer your question in a helpful way (in case you were genuinely wondering), Story Mode was pretty universally panned as a bad adaptation of the Minecraft IP, but seeing this new trailer has sort of put into perspective for a lot of people that it was not as bad as people originally treated it. I remember a similar thing happening with a lot of backlash to Byleth’s character design in Three Houses only for people to have a change of heart after Alear was revealed in Engage.

I've never Minecraft'd, I didn't even think the game had a semblance of a story. Even at the basic Joseph Campbell level. Unknown farmboy goes on an adventure to save his known universe.

I’m not the target audience. My daughter is. She will be in awe of this movie no matter what. I will enjoy taking her to see it because of the joy it will bring her

I’ve never played Minecraft (I am, alas, too old to have played it younger), but the trailer for the movie looked kinda fun - knowing zero contextual elements about the game except building things.

@Bunkerneath Since I'm not a jerk like the other commenter, Minecraft: Story Mode was critically panned since Minecraft is a sandbox game and doesn't need a story. However, the trailer makes it look good in comparison.
