The latest boxed charts data from Japan is now available courtesy of Famitsu, and once again, we can see that the Switch is still comfortably dominating in the region both with hardware and software sales. Astro Bot is the only representative from Sony's PS5 platform.
Frankly, it's mad that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe keeps selling so well. More than 7 years after its Switch debut with mere months (weeks..?!) to go until we learn more about the Switch successor, the arcade racer has now surpassed a mind-boggling 6 million units sold in the region. Worldwide, of course, the latest data confirms that the game is now sitting well above 60 million units sold.
That said, Animal Crossing: New Horizons is slowly creeping towards that tasty 8 million milestone...
For the full breakdown, here's a look at the latest top ten in full:
Looking at hardware for the week, the numbers for the Switch are slightly up from the previous data, while PS5 numbers are (surprise, surprise) slightly down. Sony's price hike for its platform clearly hasn't gone down too well, and it'll be interesting to see what the sales figures are like as we get closer to the end of the year and the eventual release of the 'Switch 2'.
Here's your look at this week's Japanese hardware chart in full.

I actually wish they’d make some games with MK8’s art style. I love the different environments, the characters, buildings etc.
Pretty much what happens when you put one of your best couch multiplayer games on a console that can support couch multiplayer out the box.
@Kienda doesn't it more or less use the artstyle of modern 3D Mario games? True to its title at that.
Crazy that Mario Kart hit 6M and Animal Crossing is inching towards 8M in Japan alone. A lot of games don't even hit those numbers worldwide and on multiple platforms.
And less than 10k combined for PS5, yikes. Not at all surprising though.
PS5 sales are absolutely rubbish.
@KryptoniteKrunch And that's only retail. They're much higher with digital.
Huh, didn't know Japan was getting a Kamaitachi no Yoru x3 rerelease, interesting and happy for it that it's on top!
Anyway, love to see 8 Deluxe in second and with those sales surpassing 6 million units in Japan alone physically, Astro Bot in third so still selling if slowly (at least physically, I bet that for PlayStation there are even more digital sales than for Switch), the usual Switch suspects in the rest of the top 10 and of course Switch itself still selling like crazy!
Poor PS5 sales, that's for sure, less than 9k both models combined for both sku's, ouch....
Congratulations on the milestone! And good news for fans of splitscreen multiplayer experiences.
Congratulations to Mario Kart 8! Of all the evergreen titles that still linger in the top 10 this and Animal Crossing are my favorites.
Also great to see Pokémon SV in the top 10! Especially after all the Pokémon haters showed up last week. Just goes to show how little Nintendo's general audience cares about the keyboard warriors.
@KryptoniteKrunch It is also crazy that seven of the Switch titles are over a million, and six of them are over three million! Mad.
Those Xbox numbers are abysmal 😬
And Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has sold more copies than Sony has Sold PS5's.
@FirstEmperor Yes, yes, we've all known for a while now that Nintendo fans will turn a blind eye toward anything they do out of a depraved love for a company that hates them. Nothing new to see there.
I guess Japan didn't buy into the PS5 price hike. Sales continuing to be low.
Shame for Astro Bot that genuinely deserves more. I expect Echoes of Wisdom to beat it's sales to date on launch numbers alone.
@ThatGuyWho wait?! Nintendo hates me? Please explain
@ThatGuyWho It brings me great joy to see the haters' call for a boycott of Pokémon completely fall on deaf ears! Comments like this are merely the icing on the cake.
Also, there is no "we." Regardless of what you think you "know" about Nintendo's depraved fans, you speak only for yourself.
I hope PS5 sales will getting better. 😟
@Anti-Matter not so sure for this gen. Sony and Microsoft are on a different path and they have gradually stepped away from the Japanese market.
I think they both have a big problem now. Their USPs have always been focused on the most powerful console in the market. They are now starting to rub toes with low end gaming PCs which is adding additional competition as they catch up and IMO, with Game pass and a number of Sony's IP available on PC, PC is better value for money with a small additional investment upfront.
Nintendo is the only console maker managing the sweet spot between consoles and PCs. Yes a gaming PC can do a lot more but Nintendo's hardware is a lot cheaper with a tonne of exclusive IP. PS5 pro, not much cheaper than a gaming PC and not many exclusives.
Are the PS5 sales so bad in Japan because people have the PS4 and don’t see the need to upgrade?
How are PS5 sales in America and Europe compared to the PS4?
Just imagine if Sony made more games like Astro Bot where they care more about fun and gameplay over graphics and performance they would have more hits for the Japanese crowd had they done more of that. Instead they chase trends like live service ganes, hero shooters, expensive cinematic games, and forcing DEI drama to their audience. It looks like they would had a difficult time winning back all those Concord money they lost.
@Johnny44 Quite surprised the other week that I can still buy a new PS4 on Sony's UK store and in high streets shops like Argos.
I don't think the generational leap between PS4 and 5 has been big. Think back to previous gens where we had jumps from SD to HD and then to 4k. Don't get me wrong, things have moved on but PS4 capability is still more than adequate and with most games cross gen, the upgrade appeal isnt huge this gen. Add in cost of living, CV delays and shortages etc etc.
@Anti-Matter
It’s their own fault! They didn’t have hardly Jack squat for compelling, exclusive software for YEARS—instead pretty much sharing a library of games with the PS4–and it doesn’t help that they actually RAISED the price!
They can’t survive off of name alone. They need games that actually move units. That’s something that Nintendo has nailed, this generation.
@BanjoPickles
I mean i don't play AAA games on my PS5 machine.
I only play 3rd party kids games with a few rated Teen games on my PS5.
@ThatGuyWho
I mean, I do agree to some extent and I do wish Nintendo would back off a bit more.. But I still think Sony cares far less about their fans than Nintendo does.
Microsoft I still can't get a reading on. They're a weird bunch
@Anti-Matter I think for you, that is an issue as you are not likely to be Sony's target audience. Don't take that the wrong way and keep being you but Sony is chasing the Western mature audience and triple A ....... and suffering a bit from it with big gaps in the release schedule and large financial risks.
Nintendo keeps pumping out triple A but for a broader audience and I would guess a much smaller budget without quality compromise.
@Johnny44 The PS5 in Japan just got it's third price hike that is bigger than the first two combined up to now ¥80k, which is a ridiculous price. That's why sales have dropped significantly in the last few weeks.
@Duncanballs
As long PS5 still get supplied with a lot of 3rd party kids games such from Outright Games, Microids, Team17, Merge Games, GameMill, Nacon, SOEDESCO, etc i will be happy because more kids games i can collect and play.
What made me worried with PS5 sales if getting struggled, it will affect the 3rd party kids games support for PS5 and PS6 in the future as the developers and publishers will choose Switch & Switch 2 rather the PS5 / PS6 version and the games will be probably get downgraded and i will be not happy to see 3rd kids games i want to play get bad downgraded quality and pesky business practice on Switch currently (code in box, partial download, streaming only) as their excuse to compensate with Switch / Switch 2 hardware architecture that have to sacrifice the performance that should be the games can have 60 fps for a simple PS4 power game with 1 - 2 GB size, but the Switch version cannot get that performance (30 fps excuse) because the developers think Nintendo fans will not complain that much about 30 fps performance, but i do really care with 60 fps even for a simple 1 - 2 GB game. If that 1 - 2 GB simple game (in this case, i used Doraemon Story of Seasons) cannot have 60 fps on Switch (but it has 60 fps on PS4), i will be disappointed like it was an excuse to not optimize the game performance into same 60 fps performance on both Switch and PS4 version.
This was the case i saw mostly from 3rd party games currently as i keep finding bad treatments for 3rd party games on Switch version so it gave me skipping stone to get the PS5 version as possible when i found the Switch version was bad.
Also, even Nintendo 1st party Switch games themself are not really all good in my opinion.
I was tired to see certain Nintendo 1st party Switch games cannot run in 60 fps for a cartoonish games that have smaller GB size like between 8 - 15 GB when the 3rd party kids games i played with as big as that GB size can have 60 fps with power of PS5 machine.
Used to be i still tolerate the Switch underpowered performance during early 2018 until 2019, but during pandemic and after pandemic, i slowly getting disappointed with 3rd party games on Switch that got bad treatments.
I thought the PS5 sales of over 5 million seemed reasonably impressive since they've hardly put any effort into trying to sell the things in Japan but casting our minds back to the late 1990's and Sega managed to shift about that many if not more Sega Saturns in Japan and that console was seen as a failure plus the video game market wasn't as potentially large as it is today either!
@Anti-Matter Switch 2 should solve most of your issues you have with the OG and hopefully soon.
BTW, good to hear your reasoning for PS5 support in these threads rather than sales are good/bad. I don't necessarily agree with all of your points, but like a bit of substance to a comment 👍
Is it just me or does anyone else HATE the bikes?
If Sony and Microsoft would enter the handheld market, I would jump at buying them. I literally don't have the space for a PS5 or XBOX Series, and I definitely don't have the time to play games in front of the TV for extended periods of time.
And no, the PS Portal does not count as a handheld.
@Spider-Kev In Mario Kart 8, I exclusively use the bikes.
NintenDoomed... Oh wait!
Good to see Astrobot is still hanging in there despite my prediction of it disappearing, but that price hike is definitely not helping the PS5 in the slightest. Be interesting to see what difference the PS5 pro makes next week but I don’t think it will do that well at that steep a price.
You guys are making me feel bad, we own 2 Switch but 0 copies of MK 8 Deluxe, haven’t even borrowed it from the library. We did play a ton of MK 8 on Wii U though.
At this point I might even be tempted to buy MK8DX Complete on Switch 2 for $70. It will have been a decade for the original plus all the dlc. Would rather finally have MK 9, but I’d get 8 while we wait.
Would be pretty funny to own it on Wii U and Switch 2 but not Switch.😁
LOL Xbox can't even come closer to 1000 units between two models per week now.
PS5 sales also collapsed, unsurprisingly, after the price hikes. I guess Sony figures they'll do better in Japan by milking their small established market than trying to expand it.
I’m sure Japanese folks are saving for the PS5Pro.

@ThatGuyWho another case of someone that jumped on the hate-bandwagon because that's what all the cool kids are doing.
@ThatGuyWho get real. It's really easy to claim that any demographic of people is depraved. I've done research on Nintendo. I know they have an internal corruption hotline. I know they try to be reserved with takedowns nowadays. I know that they've added fan requests like the Roost. They put great care into their reasoning for patching Splatoon. I think the fans hate the company more than the company hates the fans. Am I to take you at your word that a company hates its fans when it shows sincere care for quality, for keeping itself from becoming corrupt, and listens to popular fan requests once in a blue moon...? No. I'm more likely to think you have an agenda against that company, and that you're being insincere, uncaring for facts and opinions of others. Especially when you dismiss them as depraved or insane.
Sold? Or only licensed?
@Duncanballs Lol. You're probably not serious, but I'll answer anyway. How bout all the DMCAs they've sent out to fan projects over the years? All the lawsuits they've filed against other game devs, big and small? Their war against the Smash community? The list goes on and on my friend.
@FirstEmperor Rotflmao. If you were seriously worried Nintenfans would turn on them over THIS, then you're the one who doesn't know them. As for who I speak for, that would be the majority - the ones who look at the people cheering this on and laugh and laugh and laugh.
@Maubari Oh it's definitely a horse race for who hates their fans more. The PS5 Pro is just a masterclass in hate. For which fanbase slavishly supports them more, though? That's not even a question.
@Arkay Hey, I was hating on Nintendo BEFORE it was cool, pal 😂
@TheSaneInsanity Well first off, thank you for a well-reasoned argument with actual supporting evidence. The internet could use more of that. But even if the company does some things right and is trying to get better, that in no way excuses all the scummy stuff it's done over the years. Nor does it excuse this latest scummy thing: using ticky-tack patent law to sue a (relatively) small developer for the crime of innovating Pokemon. Make no mistake, Nintendo still hates its fans, and the people who buy their products anyway are still deranged.
@ThatGuyWho Wow, so many comments you replied to at once... not sure I've ever seen someone do that here haha.
But yes, it does make me wonder why Nintendo is so agressive towards their fans. Like, protecting their IP's is one thing.. but I think I also heard them taking down fan arts/games that clearly have Nintendo mentioned in them? SEGA, on the other hand, seems perfectly fine and even happy that people make fan arts and games of their franchises (Sonic in particular).
@ThatGuyWho yep definitely serious. Nintendo is built on a long standing brand that is global. They have a right to protect their IP. It's theirs after all. Whilst many fan projects are with good intent, many also go against what Nintendo wants for it's IP. It draws the line on all of it, good and bad. Why are you even on this thread or site with such a dislike of what this website is all about?
@ThatGuyWho I can't live with irrational anger. It just makes me bitter at everything and disatisfied with life. Now and the future matter more than what mattered in the past. What the past is for is judging the potential for harm in the future, It's not something to be fixated on forever. If I miss the mark in judging who they are now I would be missing the point of using the past to learn, and I'm more likely to do that if my judgement is clouded by "Righteous" anger.
Right now I do think Nintendo is reaching too far with their Palworld lawsuit... specifically patenting game mechanics. That's fair. I believe it may get thrown out in court for patent abuse. In that case Nintendo will get their just desserts, and I don't even need to lift a finger or be angry about it.
By Patent abuse I mean that they patented this mechanic after other games have used it, and they patented a game mechanic.
As an aside, here are the negatives of Anger. Anger clouds rational thinking, Anger is violent, Anger is the emotion I see most often in propoganda. The internet in general needs better anger management skills.
Another 50k+ Switch week and PS5 drowning again in sub 10k.
There are games that would kill to get 6 million global and MK8D casually does it just from Japan with physical copies.
@Maubari Well, I (predictably) got a lotta blowback, and I didn't want to quintuple post 😂 And yes, that's another good point about fan projects. Nintendo DMCAs them; Sega hires them. Sega does what Nintendon't. (Now if Sega could consistently make good games, they'd be in business.)
@Duncanballs Everyone CAN defend their IP, but most people don't. Not as viciously as Nintendo, that is. Possibly because they hate their fans, maybe? As for why I'm here, I go to Nintendo Life AND Push Square, Pure Xbox and Time Extension, because I think they do a good job covering the news. I only interact when I accidentally read the comments and get triggered 😕
@TheSaneInsanity Maybe you can forget the past, but not everyone. "Never forget" is a common phrase for a reason. Btw, you catch the news that Nintendo JUST filed monster-catching and -riding patents four months ago? Safe to say their scummy days are far from over.
@ThatGuyWho It's not about forgetting or forgiving. It's about thinking rationally, I can edit out the part about forgiveness from the previous message and my arguement will still stand. I'm glad I can think rationally, in that case. I know my mom suffered because she'd irrationally explode at a single slight against her... She shut everyone who loved her in her life out because of it, not just her abusers, but everyone. She only takes gifts of food in the mail because food can't be returned.
I said that part was fair to say is bad. But I don't need to worry about it or be angry about it, just desserts will be served, and thus this scenario is unlikely to continue.
I often wonder if abstaining because you remember a punishment is any different from abstaining because you are who you are. Does it matter? Are the reasons wrong but the actions right? (I'm talking about the scenario in which nintendo's lawsuit is thrown out, and nintendo has the opportunity to try this again.)
I think we all remember a moment like that in life. Where we did the right thing for the wrong reasons. We need to press on anyway despite that question.
@ThatGuyWho There's nothing in my post to indicate I was ever worried about anything, but to see a game with 5.4+ million physical sales still in the top 10 nearly 2 years after its release is a pleasant surprise and really drives the point home that the keyboard warriors are irrelevant to Nintendo.
The majority of people are unlikely to care about or even be aware of any of the nontraversies that you mentioned. So the idea that you speak for any of them is the height of delusion and simply confirms that you are obviously projecting when you call Nintendo fans deranged.
Now I will grant you that Nintendo's threat to take down Smash Bros streams at Evo was a horrible thing to do and is the one actually "scummy" thing related to your post, but Nintendo backed off on that one pretty fast so there's nothing even remotely resembling a "war" against the Smash community. It's also pretty funny you have to go back a decade to find something genuinely bad that Nintendo did.
It certainly is fun to "laugh and laugh and laugh." Thank you for giving me several laughs in this thread!
@FirstEmperor Nice essay in response to my paragraph, chum. Totally proves Nintenfans aren't deranged 👍 I'd respond to it, but it's just not worth it at this point (on multiple levels), so I'll just agree to wildly disagree.
(Edit: well so much for that, lol. I went on to get into a full-on flame war with this (in retrospect, obvious) troll. Deleting it now out of shame, but leaving this note of explanation for any future readers of the thread.)
@ThatGuyWho I have no interest in proving or disproving anything about "Nintendo fans," because I have the humility to understand that I speak only for myself. Maybe someday you'll have the emotional maturity to do the same.
And FYI, your nonresponse is a response.
@ThatGuyWho Thank you for your continued responses! For someone who claims this conversation isn't worth having, you sure do seem to enjoy continuing it.
@ThatGuyWho Indeed, it is quite enjoyable, and I'm mature enough to own it. You, on the other hand, claim this conversation isn't worth having while continuing to have it. Honesty seems to be a problem for you.
LMAO, I know Xbox isn't that strong in Japan sales-wise, but man I didn't imagine they could get to the point of not getting 1,000 sales combined in one week.
@FirstEmperor Let me guess deleted messages to make you look like you're replying to the same message over and over again.
@Spider-Kev I only use the bikes myself.
@TheSaneInsanity Calling Nintendo fans deranged while coming off as the same is funny.
The lines are hysterical:
"As for who I speak for, that would be the majority - the ones who look at the people cheering this on and laugh and laugh and laugh."
"I only interact when I accidentally read the comments and get triggered"
"Nintendo fans will turn a blind eye toward anything they do out of a depraved love for a company that hates them"
@HammerGalladeBro Personally I'm very happy with my Xbox. But what will be interesting is if those numbers go up after TGS and the Xbox showcase they had there.
@TheSaneInsanity Indeed, there was even a final post that I didn't respond to, since I took a break from the internet to clear the first area in Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. I mean, I do have the email notification so I know what was said, but no point in responding now.
@DripDropCop146 Those were some bangers, for sure! Here's another:
"Nintendo still hates its fans, and the people who buy their products anyway are still deranged."
Anyways, back on topic: Congrats again to Pokémon SV on hanging in there in the top 10! Most fun I've had with Pokémon since Emerald 20 years ago.
