Long-time Nintendo Life readers will be aware of the love-hate (mainly hate) relationship we’ve had with the FIFA series over the course of the Switch’s life.
The first Switch entry, FIFA 18, was considered a positive start, even though it felt feature-light compared to other consoles and was clearly based on the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game. FIFA 19 added a couple of basic new modes, but wasn’t massively different, and that’s when our goodwill started to drop quicker than Neymar in the box.
FIFA 20, 21, 22 and 23 were all identical to FIFA 19, and not in the way people lazily say “EA Sports games are just the same thing every year”. No new features, no gameplay tweaks, nothing: these were ‘Legacy Editions’, you see, meaning if you put FIFA 19 and FIFA 23 side-by-side, you’d see no difference beyond kit tweaks.
By the end of it, we were frankly done with the series on Switch, with our FIFA 23 review concluding by asking “that you join us in paying our respects to the memory of the FIFA series, by leaving it to rest in peace”. So you can probably forgive us for assuming that EA Sports FC 24 would be little more than another sloppy Legacy Edition, albeit one with new branding this time. The same pig, but with sunglasses on it.
Imagine our shock, then, to find that the Switch version of EA Sports FC 24 offers absolutely everything the Xbox, PlayStation and PC versions offer. All of it. After all our years of moaning, they’ve actually gone and ruddy well done it.
That ancient gameplay engine that was basically channelling the ghost of FIFA 13 on the Xbox 360? Completely scrapped in favour of Frostbite – you know, the one we’ve been wanting this entire time. It’s a big visual overhaul, at least in terms of graphical detail.
That also means the game feels more like a modern EA football game too. Gone are the clunky animations from two generations ago: now dribbling is much smoother and it’s far more satisfying to put together flowing, passing football. All the updated player faces from other versions are in there, and so are many of the managers, so if you play as Celtic (oh, and Celtic Park’s in now too!) you’ll see Brendan Rodgers’ stern face from the touchline.
Remember how Ultimate Team was basically a taxidermist’s dream, because every single year it was essentially a perfectly preserved recreation of the Ultimate Team mode from the Xbox 360 version of FIFA 17? All that ancient guff has finally been binned, and Ultimate Team on Switch is identical to that on other consoles.
That means Season rewards, Objectives, Squad Battles, FUT Champions, Division Rivals, Moments, the new chemistry system, stadium customisation – all the stuff that’s been added to Ultimate Team on Xbox and PlayStation over the years while Switch owners stood watching with our noses pressed up against the window – it’s all in here for the first time. It’s identical, right down to the addition of women in this year’s Ultimate Team. Getting new features the same year as other consoles? Truly friends, we now dine among kings.
That also means Volta football, which has been on other formats in FIFA 20, 21, 22 and 23 but has been little more than a mysterious fable on Switch, is now included in its entirety. It could be argued that it’s even better suited to Nintendo’s console, because its arcade-like mini-games are perfect for short bursts and local multiplayer.
Essentially, everything we’ve been moaning about for the past six FIFA reviews has finally been addressed. Put the Switch version of EA Sports FC 24 next to the game on other platforms and – other than the expected drop in graphical quality that clearly can’t be avoided – it’s finally the same experience in terms of the feature set.
It’s not perfect. As much as we appreciate EA’s decision to finally make the jump to Frostbite, and as much as it makes the game far more detailed than the previous FIFA games on Switch, the one benefit of the previous engine was that its primitive nature meant it could run at 60fps without a hitch. To accommodate the extra detail provided by Frostbite, this has now been dropped to 30fps.
It’s not a massive deal-breaker by any means, because the generally slower pace of a football game compared to, say, a racing game means a drop from 60fps to 30fps doesn’t affect gameplay massively, but players who ignored our advice and played FIFA 23 on Switch will notice the drop in fluidity, even though they’ll get accustomed to it before too long.
Ultimate Team will also potentially suffer from one major issue: the game doesn’t have a shared Transfer Market. The Xbox, PlayStation, PC and Nintendo versions each have their own separate Transfer Markets, and while we can understand some of the reasons behind that – some claim that PC players can use bots to snap up players quicker – we’d at least like to see all the console versions share the same marketplace one day.
The reason for this is clear: partly because of the way Nintendo players have been treated by the series over the years, the FIFA player base on Switch has been progressively dropping. While we’d hope news that it’s actually good this year will build that back up again, it’ll still be a miniscule fraction of what’s on other consoles.
Xbox and PlayStation users have had early access for about a week, and at the time of us finishing up our review, there were around 6.7 million items on the Xbox Transfer Market. On Switch, there were five. Not five million, just five. One player and a couple of kits. Of course, that’ll rise when the game is released but it still won’t come close: when we reviewed FIFA 20 on Switch, a few days after launch there were only around 15,000 items on the Transfer Market.
Having a Transfer Market that’s literally hundreds of times smaller than that on other consoles has a knock-on effect on other aspects of Ultimate Team. It’s harder to sell players for coins when there are fewer players looking for them, and while it’s great to now have Squad Based Challenges – where you make and submit teams with certain conditions in exchange for rewards – it’s going to be much harder to complete these when you need a certain player and the Transfer Market is relative tumbleweeds.
Don’t get us wrong, Ultimate Team is still great on Switch now, and other single-player modes in it like Squad Battles and Moments will still let you gain rewards in other ways when there aren’t many players around, something that wasn’t possible in past Switch FIFAs. But hopefully one day EA will merge the console Transfer Markets to make the mode feel truly busy.
These issues aside, EA Sports FC 24 is the FIFA series’ equivalent of Ange Postecoglu’s arrival as Spurs manager: after years of the same old rubbish, someone has finally listened and brought something new and exciting to the table. It may have a couple of performance issues – the game, not Ange – but we at least appreciate that this is often what accompanies ambition.
It’s taken almost the entire lifetime of the Switch to get there, but finally – FINALLY – Nintendo fans have an EA football game they can be proud of, one that offers full feature parity with the Xbox, PlayStation and PC versions.
We could continue to be angry and ask why it took this long, but let’s focus on the positives. Now that the Switch version has finally caught up in terms of features, the groundwork has been laid for the Switch’s successor to bring the performance up to speed too. For now, we can finally say what we’ve wanted to say for more than half a decade: this is the best football game ever released on a Nintendo system.
Conclusion
After years of lazy, half-hearted Legacy Editions, EA Sports has finally delivered a football game on the Switch that offers full feature parity with other consoles. A much-needed engine upgrade trades frame rate for fidelity, but Switch owners finally have a port they can be proud of, rather than feeling like an afterthought.

8/10. I guess EA isn’t a lazy developer anymore.
They needed to create one fully working game to duplicate for future years!
@Lord you mean the switch successor isn’t around the corner?
Whole I can still play Sensible World of Soccer on my Xbox Series console I will continue to ignore all modern football titles for not being as accessible or fun.
@Lord That's exactly what I thought. They couldn't call the first game in what is in-name-only a new series Legacy Edition, but they now have the one that can be called Legacy Edition next year!
Wow, finally a good football game on Switch!
Good to see they’ve stepped up their game! …finally.
I guess they'll put out a good product when it's a good business decision.
They can hardly risk putting out a bad product when retiring the FIFA branding to launch their new EA Sports FC brand.
well hot dog.
good that Fifa has quit then...
Just pre-ordered it on the eshop, looking forward to playing some this weekend. Only got the first FIFA game on the Switch, glad EA has finally made a new one.
Severing ties with FIFA always pays off
Im gonna buy EA football game, is this even the same timeline anymore
See, EA CAN make a good sports game if it tries. It's just a shame that it took this long to do so. Here's hoping the other EA Sports games on the Switch get the same treatment soon!
Can't believe NL censored Chris' review by only allowing ONE Celtic screenshot this year 😏
I just knew that it was Chris who'd be reviewing this game!
I'm normally a Pes/winning eleven kinda guy, but this actually looks good on switch, so I might buy it 👀
Hmm. Well then. I'm not much of a soccer guy, but in the past I enjoyed booting up a footie for a match or two. Not worth full price for me but when this game drops in price I might actually get this one, maybe. Good to see them putting some effort into the Switch version for once.
Only bought 23 recently for about £6 on the eshop so I'll get my use of that this year and buy 24 next year when people start ditching it for 25. I don't play Ultimate Team so won't be missing out.
Omg, they finally gave a *****!
Happy for those who enjoy football/soccer! These used to be a cash grab in the worst possible way every year...
Already pre-ordered and downloaded, can't wait for tomorrow. The Switch has been crying out for a decent football game
This is the first Switch version of "FIFA" that I'm considering buying at full price. Of course EA are a mixed bag of a company nowadays but they should be congratulated for finally making an effort and I actually want this new game to become a successful brand, after breaking away from the grubby mits of IRL FIFA.
I always mention this but despite what it became its worth mentioning just how amazing and revelatory the first FIFA was back in '93. I'm not really much of a football fan IRL and never have been but I was thoroughly swept up in just what a brilliant game it was. My elderly grandparents saw an advert for it on their tiny portable black and white television and found the graphics so impressive they were actually confused as to whether it was real footage or not, and made a point of asking me about if it was real or if they'd somehow misunderstood! Thats how big a leap it was as far as presentation and realism.
I didn't have a Megadrive at the time, only a Master System, but a year or so later when my family got a PC I grabbed the CD-ROM version of the first FIFA which was a great port of the Megadrive game but added FMV sections and a full audio commentary. I bought it almost entirely so I could excitedly show it off to my grandparents, and they could see the best version of the game that had amazed them so much. I wish they were around today to see what games have become, it would blow their minds!
I just want a team of 22 Mary Earps
@sixrings it's around the corner, yes, but I'm pretty sure EA will release "legacy" editions for Switch even after it's successor release.
Does anyone know if the full game is on the physical cart or if that whole 30GB has to be downloaded?
Edit: Someone on YouTube said 9GB had to be downloaded when having the physical. Can anyone confirm?
@5th313ment wasn’t the fifa version like 18gigs with 60fps.
Sounds great, though I will still be buying the PS5 version as usual
I'm glad to see a better football game on Nintendo Switch. Next year with the release of Nintendo Switch 2, performance concerns won't be a problem anymore and we'll see better FCs in the future. For Nintendo Switch, FC 24 is a good achievement. Well done EA.
If game developers didn't try for "realism" (graphic wise) and higher ploy count they could get a full 60 fps. That would be nice. I don't mind less poly count if it means the game will run better.
I use to buy football games every year. This will be my first in 5 years. Looking forward to giving it a go.
Hallelujah!
They actually put some effort into their global football sim franchise. I stopped playing this game seriously many years ago, now my teens play it on the PS consoles. So not for me.
@sixrings File size wouldn't have any direct correlation with frame rate.
wait, that's a CLEAR visual upgrade??? It looks like a gamecube game at best!! those visuals look horrific!!! bad screen grabs??
@samuelvictor Thanks for sharing.
Fifa 94 (the first title on PC) was my first exposure to the series. At that point, they didn't have the license for the player names yet. So you had strikers with names like "Bing Gordon". Part of the fun was calling out the comedy names.
Bing Gordon was actually EA's CEO, but I didn't know that back then.
7 years late, but good that EA finally made some effort
@RadioHedgeFund and join us for the year offline worldcup this year berlin, next year denmark! sensiblesoccer.de
Small player base is a weird comment, since all fifa games on the switch seemed to sell ok, and the switch userbase as a whole is far bigger than series x/ps5
For once they actually make a game instead of garbage? Well what do you know.
EA probably figured they had to make a decent game since they'll be hurting for sales with the FIFA brand name dropped
@samuelvictor Nice story. Thanks for posting it.
So this is the best footy game on the Switch. That is until Nintendo World Cup comes to NSO bwahaha.
I've always been a once every 5-8 years kind of person when it comes to all sports games. I love sports! Any and all! But for some reason sport video games get redundant to me. It also gets really silly spending the money each year for updated rosters.
I purchased FIFA and MLB not too long ago, but it might just be time to buy EA Sports FC. I'm waaaay overdue on a Madden game, but unfortunately that's not an option on Switch anyways.
@sixrings that's very obvious hahaha.
I'll get this game eventually, my kid will be happy!
…and all it took was for EA to lose their FIFA license.
So they wait till the last bloody year of the console to do a decent job lol. Histerical. Anyhoo, Switch is going to have a very decent holiday season in the UK. This better not delay the Switch NG hahaha!
@Smug43 get your eyes tested quickly. Google fifa on GameCube images then come back and post
@5th313ment no way this is using 32GB cart. You will have to download
Apart from buying multiple years FIFA games for my lad, I don't think I've bought one for myself since the original on mega drive. So sorely tempted, but my back log is embarrassing as it is
I feel like getting this just to show support for them finally putting some effort in.
@RadioHedgeFund nothing beats Sensi!!! Still load it up on my Snes with my bros. We First played Sensi on Amiga 500 in the early 90s, sooooo good.
No idea how anyone could want to play the world's most boring sport. 3 hours for like 2 goals, if you're lucky and it's not a 0-0 draw. Lmfao.
so the UT transfer market had a whopping 47 items listed earlier ... I'm hoping that picks up. the whole game does still feel like it needs a day one patch as it doesn't have up-to-date team rosters yet and there are some real noticeable stutters and pauses both in game and when transiting through menus. all that was after a 21.1gb install whilst using the cartridge this afternoon (as my copy arrived a bit early).
It's worse than the legacy Fifa games on Switch - it's 30fps and everything is slow motion. Annoying as it has all the whistles and bells but the base game isn't as good.
@Patendo I still play on my Amiga 500 with my Quickshot Joystick - it's the gentlemanly way to play! For me it's a top 10 video game of all time.
Wow this game reviewed better than I thought it would.
Now we just need Madden on the Switch!
All the money EA saved for this year's FIFA license costs, they put into developing a proper Switch version of their football game. That was a good and smart move, EA
@Qwiff Haha that's awesome! Yes the first versions of FIFA were missing lots of things you'd expect today, I think they played really well, a more arcadey experience. Sounds like we had the same version, mine was the CD-Rom version which had commentary added (which hadn't previously been in other CD systems like the Mega-CD port). I played that game sooooooo much!
@HalBailman Thank you!
two thing i don't like about FC24
1, drop 60fps to 30 fps is huge downgrade.
2, i can not using capture 30s video feature in game, why that game block this feature (
7.8/10 too much soccer
@RenYuMakoto they probably didn't block it. But games that require a ton of resources and are having issues running will usually not have video recording as it sucks power from the system to record.
@popey1980 thank you so much. So this solves the info about size and cart size. So Nintendo World Report YouTube channel said the game fully downloaded was 29.3GB on version 1.53.dd6d. And Popey1980 said with his gamecart he still had to download 21.1GB. So roughly 8.2GB is on the cart. Now the game is playable from the cart but from the video that was talking about it most of the teams and modes aren't there if you start without updating. Just wow, what a waste EA. What was your version number Popey? NintendoLife maybe you should add this info to your review as I was waiting for this to see if I got physical or cart?
" this is the best football game ever released on a Nintendo system."
International Superstar Soccer 64 laughs intensely
@Texasinstrument the joystick always made it feel better! I hope you play all the classics as the Amiga 500 had incredible games. I run them off my Raspberry Pi these days.
I downloaded the game tonight but Nintendo still won't let me play it, lol. It's now 3am EST US but Nintendo won't let pre-orders play.
Edit: At 3:01 it enabled! Lol
@5th313ment hey, so I just checked using the cart on my daughters switch and it’s version 1.0.0. So far no day one patch but it’s ver.1.53.dd6d. A really weird ‘quirk’ I found last night are contract negotiations in career mode. Rather than the fluid conversations used in the PS5 version of FIFA23, the Switch gets these really weird static screens that just don’t “fit” for example I was negotiating contract length and the picture on the screen was a restaurant tray full of desserts 😂
Hey, can anyone help? I have downloaded the game from eshop today and started playing it. But it extremely slow, like its running in slow motion, plus the crowds don't exist at all. They are like a bunch of cardboards. Only when cut scenes play out, full 3d models of crowd are seen. Is anyone else having these issues? I don't know what's wrong!
@sixrings oh no, they still are. Look at screenshot 5/8. Almost half the crowd are in the exact same pose. They look like they came directly from Sims 1 game but with new clothes.
I know people probably won't notice while playing the game but that screenshot really bugs me.
If anyone getting this needs online, send me a message as I have space in my family membership 😊
@Tahmidw98 try going into settings and moving the game into your system memory instead of the SD card. If that doesn't work delete the game amd download it again. Also make sure you have the day one patch.
@popey1980 they are trying to bribe you to lower your contract price with sweets! Lol
Unbelievable, on my switch game So on my Switch FC 24 is 29.3GB on version 1.53.dd6d. The switch says 8.1GB is the software and 21.1GB is the update data (this is not a day one patch but rather the rest of the game, but technically a day 1 patch but not in the traditional sense). So EA literally put the tiniest gamecart they could to do a physical cart. Just when I think they are changing. And Popey1980 your daughter's game is version 1.0 and it must be 8.1GB. I was going to get physical but not if 75% of the game is download. Popey I would love to know how much of the game is on the cart? From what I hear most teams are missing, modes, etc. Just wow, what a waste EA.
@5th313ment
Considering the showers of sh*te we have had on Switch for Fifa, an the other developers that consistently do this in regards to cart size, I think you are being too critical.
I think we should credit what they actually done from a game perspective rather then cart/download/update etc, which isn't what game reviews are judged on.
No Madden? No moolah.
@5th313ment Okay bro. I am downloading it again. Lets see. Thanks for the reply.
@5th313ment the cartridge only has friendlies on it for about 8 men’s sides and some women’s sides, you have to download the rest of the game, so far I think it’s about 21gb in size. A bit disappointed with that part as would have just gone all digital if had known this before
Edit - sorry my reply was too late played a few friendly games against my son and we are really enjoying the game so far, big improvement on legacy games
don't know how they've released the game with Kane still at Spurs.
@Rosona no the game is great! I really love Volta as it brings me back to Fifa road to world cup 98 on my n64 which had indoor walled pitches. But EA should have made it online only if they weren't going to put the real game on a cart.
@Uncle_Franklin I got a roster update late today
@DuckHunter yeah, that's why I made multiple posts on YouTube channels and here so that people would know this. That's why I went with digital as I'm like 8gb and not a full game isn't worth it. I was hoping that Nintendo Life would post the info in the review as a lot of people want to know. But no dice.
@5th313ment I was surprised, as couldn’t see the requires download message on the box cover art on all the places I looked at ordering from so thought I was safe lol, didn’t notice until I physically had the box in my hand after we had brought it. Oh well, at least had space to download it this time (just feel sorry for kids who might not have the space straight away and parents need to get another Micro SD card) and we are really enjoying the game a lot so far
I'm sorry but this isn't a review. Most of the article was fapping over how the game isn't previous games rather than talking about what the game is. I learnt nothing tanglible about EASFC23's gameplay nor did I learn if it's a good video game all on it's own.
Thanks for continually telling me that a new release isn't previous releases, though.
This review is either paid or made by someone with no FIFA experience. The drop to 30fps is so utterly horrendous. It makes the game way slower than any Legacy version, delays your timing significantly IN A SPORTS GAME. Good luck with manually defending anything.
EA have starved you for so long, you get a feature complete port that's less enjoyable to play than any previous ones, and you eat it up. For all the good it does, the 30fps makes the gameplay, the thing that should matter the most, horrible.
Only played a few matches but so far I'm utterly disappointed.
First thing I changed was getting rid of Sue Smith as commentator and then change the game speed in settings.
I would have gladly taken a graphics downgrade rather than the 30fps drop. Horribly horribly slow. I went from Fifa 18 to 22 and was waiting for this. I fired up FIFA 22 to compare speed and it was painful.
Kinda wish I downloaded 23 while it was on sale over the summer and called it a day for my footy fix on Switch for its remaining lifetime.
For all of the faults of the "Legacy" releases, they all had a completely playable game on the cartridge.
Charging more for and skimping on the cartridge is a pathetic showing from EA, but that's been their modus operandi for the better part of the last two decades.
Downgrade from full game to mandatory download?
Downgrade from 60fps to 30fps?
I find those to be more egregious than releasing a "legacy edition", to be perfectly frank.
At the time of writing, AU$29 (after tax) is only US$18.59, which is all I paid for FIFA 23. "Legacy edition" or not, that price is more than fair for a complete physical release with all of the updated content (on a 16GB cart).
Even at a significant discount, FC24 does not look particularly enticing, especially if I have to download a 20GB+ patch for it to even be playable (and that's only going to pile up with each successive instalment). I would have gladly bought it on day one had EA done the honourable thing and put it on a 32GB cart, but I suppose a decent, honest product is too much to ask for these days.
Question I wonder though if this will the start of new release on switch or will next year be a legacy edition again. Like last time
@kobashi100 Yeah with not paying for that license , EA must be hurting for cash. I hate this extra downliad madness. Ill pass until there is a v good digital sale. It should be illegal to release like this if there is a big enough cart available. Greed is king but this
Is ea afterwards all.
@Sisilly_G I 1000% agree, greed is king in this life i guess. Not to mention they did not need to pay for the license this year ...
@RadioHedgeFund PIxel Cup Soccer on switch is excellent if sensible soccer is to one's liking.
