Honestly? At first I was really tired of remakes. Like, I remember 2018 after a stellar 2017 when we got Wii U ports like every month but I guess at this point I'm just tired of getting tired of remakes and I just embrace them. With new games having really long development times I understand having to fill up the calendar, specially when talking about a platform holder like Nintendo.

And besides, I still get excited when we get like a really niche remaster that makes 3 people happy, like Baiten Kaitos 1+2. Or remakes from games that have been unavaliable for a long time, like Paper Mario TTYD. Or a complete reimagining of a old niche game, like LiveALive or Trials of Mana.

Even when the old game is popular is exiting, I never played Dragon Quest III and I'm genuinly looking forward at the HD-2D remake in the works and that game is like the most iconic Dragon Quest in Japan since I never played that one and getting an updated version of it to play just sounds neat.

Not at all, getting games available on the current platform is fantastic though I would say Nintendo's picks could've done with being more varied in terms of franchise given everything after the Pikmin 1+2 physical release tomorrow except Another Code is Mario. An example of making things more varied:

  • TTYD -> Fire Emblem Path of Radiance
  • Mario vs. DK -> Golden Sun + The Lost Age

Kind of, yeah. Having already played all the Mario games that have upcoming remakes, it does lessen the amount of games in Nintendo's current release schedule that I can look forward to. The remakes do look really good (except maybe Luigi's Mansion 2 which seems like just a simple HD remaster) but I'd rather spend my time and money on games that are completely new to me.

But that's ok, I'm not going to run out of games to play if I don't buy everything Nintendo releases, and there are definitely people who are excited to play these games on Switch. I do appreciate remakes/remasters if it's a game I haven't had a chance to play before for one reason or another. And if every Nintendo console going forward for the foreseeable future is going to be backwards compatible with the Switch (which I certainly think is a possibility) then it'll be a good thing to have as many classic games as possible available in the Switch ecosystem.

Thank you Nintendo for giving us Donkey Kong Jr Math on Switch Online

I'm not tired of remakes in general. I'm tired of remakes that add nothing more than some visual enhancements, call it a day, and then charge full price. Which would have been less likely to happen, if there hadn't been a 20-years-gap between the release of the original version and the remake, leading to the original skyrocketing in price and the remake being the "cheaper solution".

With game development continually getting more expensive it's easy to see why publishers depend on sequels and remakes. We've all seen what happens when a multi-million dollar game fails to find an audience. It usually results in a studio being shuttered. So mining nostalgia isn't a terrible way to angle your project towards being at least a mild success and keeping your doors open.

I think that we are currently getting a bit of an overload on remakes right now, yes. However, a lot of the titles are ones o never got to play as I grew up with a wii and only got my Switch about 2 years ago, so I can catch up on new titles, old titles, and everything in between. It does feel like a lot close together tho.

@Anti-Matter Remakes only become optional if the original is available alongside it. Otherwise there's not really a choice--either play a remake that may or may not be as faithful to the original or don't.

I really don't mind the amount we're getting at all. A lot of remade/remastered games are ones that are very special or important to people, such as Metroid Prime, TTYD, Resident Evil 4, Baten Kaitos, Mario RPG, etc. And I think remastering games goes a long way towards game preservation, as they're now playable on modern systems, and people don't have to shell out a ton of money for an OG copy.

@StarPoint I think a remake only strengthens games preservation if they can offer the original game alongside it. MediEvil PS4 and the Sam & Max remasters are probably the best examples of this.

@Link-Hero Never said remakes were a bad thing, I just said I was tired of the overabundance of remakes.

As long as people want retro there are going to be be remakes. Since alot of people don't have access to older consoles but want to play older games remakes are really the only legal choice they have. Companies see remakes as easy money as well.

Not I! I love getting updated versions of games on a single platform. Or games that weren’t available in my region originally but are now available with a new coat of paint. Plus there are a ton of new games to go with the remakes and collections that I really can’t keep up. I’m at the point that I really want to sit out next gen so i can beat some of these treasures. Honestly getting a rerelease of my long shot series Baten Kaitos (and I have the originals) is just fantastic. Keep em coming I say!

Not inherently. What I'm getting tired of is REMASTERS and remakes that feel like remasters (i.e. little to no content added and just a graphical bump). I want to see more remakes that make significant content upgrades. Good examples of those include the earlier Pokemon remakes (FRLG, HGSS, ORAS), the Metroid remakes (ZM and SR), and Mario 64 DS. If I wanted to play the original experiences over again, either give them to me on VC/NSO or I'll break out the original game. I don't want to spend $60 on basically the same experience I only paid $30-$50 in the past, if it's going to be priced the same as a new, original entry it should feel comparable in content to one (at least to the best of their ability without making it completely different from the original game).

That I also agree with. The only thing that's really made me buy remakes to games I own that don't have substantial changes and additions is that...I love certain games and series and I'm not gonna get another one otherwise/regardless. Been a good year for those for me, I have to admit! What's next, Beyond Good and Evil at this rate? I don't even want to buy Ubisoft games anymore but I could possibly be convinced to buy that one a third time.

But in most circumstances, yeah I'd prefer something new. A remake like how Hollywood does it (probably the only context in which I'll say that). Where like...its a new thing that just uses an older thing as a basis, a starting point, or at least not a one to one same thing with minimum additions beyond the technology behind it. Otherwise...at best I'll look at what its like online, maybe listen to an updated soundtrack, but its not gonna convince me to spend my hard earned money.

At this point in the Switch's life I'm ok with it.

I also haven't had a chance to play many of these games, I've only really touched the GameCube library through the Switch!
I totally understand the frustration some people are feeling, especially if they aren't into Mario or have played all these titles before.

Looking forward to trying the Thousand Year Door next year though whist keeping my fingers crossed for an F-Zero GX remaster!🤞

I honestly welcome remakes more than ever. For me there are two things about modern day gaming that make remakes ideal for me:
1. The Switch has revolutionised gaming for me. Having a console-like experience on-the-go is, for me, the biggest event in gaming since the move to 3D — and I personally want to experience as many of my old favourites on the Switch as possible.
2. A lot of the games I grew up with and am fond of are now 20-30 years old. While some have aged gracefully, there are many that I think could do with some modern QoL features, or even a complete reimagining. There are also plenty of games that were around as I was growing up that I never had the chance to play, but they feel a bit too dated to experience for the first time in 2023.

I also quite like the idea of remakes as reimaginings rather than just straight remasters. FF7 Remake, IMO, has done an excellent job of this.

Nope. I’m all for bringing previous games to modern consoles in some way, shape, or form. Especially if it’s a true remake that makes the game feel almost like new in the case of Mario RPG. But even if it’s a remaster or just a port, that’s going to help people who missed out the first time to get another chance to play it. Best of all, people won’t have to pay a disgusting amount of money for the original at some retro store like Paper Mario TTYD. With Switch, I personally love to experience how classic games play portably.

I can see why some might be a little irked at the glut of remakes for Switch right now but to me that just hints at Nintendo quietly gearing up for the NG Switch.

Something to be said for remasters is that they cost a heck of a lot less money than full-on remakes and that opens the door to titles that otherwise probably wouldn't be viable.

I certainly don't think we'd have seen the Baten Kaitos games ever again if the only option had been to make them again from scratch, and they are astronomically expensive if you want to pick them up on GameCube.

KryptoniteKrunch

Not at all.

Just because they're remasters/remakes doesn't mean I've played them. I never got around to playing Mario RPG or Mario vs DK for example. So those games will be new to me. Even if it's something like NSMBU Deluxe that I've played and don't want to pick up on Switch, it was new to a lot of people and happy for those people who never bought it originally.

@KryptoniteKrunch In the case of the Mario Vs Donkey Kong and SMRPG remakes, I have to hard disagree. Nintendo already had a means of rereleasing the original versions of those games on NSO and while that's far from perfect, it's still more practical than charging steep prices for glossier versions of old games that don't seem to be adding any real benefits to the experience, as far as I know.
